Opiate Detox & Withdrawal

How long does it take to completely detox off of opiates as well as barbiturates? I have taken a number of meds for various issues over the past 30 years off and on. In the past I took all kinds of crap from one "Pain Specialist" and one Pharmacist. The amounts they gave me were criminal. I put myself in rehab for almost 5 months but 3 months later I was taking SOME meds again.
Unlike a lot of addicts, if you are given the meds for legitimate pain issues, you not only have to
go through detox and withdrawal but we also have to deal with the pain it was covering up.
It's hard to find support from those closest to me because they know the extent of my medical issues and don't believe I should stop taking the 4mg of Dilaudid, (Hydromorphone), 8-12 times a day.
I have gone off of those as well as Fiornal for headaches, cold turkey. Fiornal is full of barbiturates and I no longer want that in my system either.
It's been a week and I cannot function at all! I have terrible insomnia, jitters, lightheaded, horrible headache, weakness and pain everywhere!
Can someone tell me how long this will last? PLEASE HELP! I want to be drug free once and for all FOREVER!

Hi there-   You haven't checked back since you posted here; I hope you do...

As you've discovered, the Fiorinal offers a whole separate set of withdrawal symptoms...it's important to taper off this med because of the seizure risk with cold turkey. It's been a week since you've been off of it so you may be out of the woods as far as seizure is concerned but the anxiety and sick feeling may hang around for awhile...

How are you feeling today?  How can we help?

(Thanks for the PM lulu)

Hey there- Welcome to the forum.  As one chronic pain sufferer/addict to another I feel you.  Congrats on wanting to get clean.  Listen, detoxing off the opiates at that level is totally safe.  It S*&% big time but is a he*& you will live through.  I was on dialaudid at a similar dose plus oxy when I c/t.  However, the floricet is another thing.  I have no experience with it personally but know that it is terrible to come off of.  There is a very wise woman on this site named Vicki who is an expert on this.  I am sure she will read your post and give some advice.  I will check back in later and see and if not I will pm her.  Hang in there, stay hydrated, and don't give up hope.  You are taking steps to get your life back and I promise it will be worth it.
Sending support...

I'm 5days clean from opiates and for me I have not had any withdrawal symptoms.. but I know a lot of people that was on heroin and talked with their dr and got on suboxone.. heroin and pain meds are the same in a since. So maybe suboxone might be what you need! But talk with your Dr an they will kno what's best for your situation being that you have a lot of pain issues.. Good luck!!
