Percocet / Oxycontin Addiction - Please Help

Hi Everyone,
I posted a message a week or so ago, but I cannot find it, so I will post with updated details. I believe I can get the help I need here, and I hope lots of you reply with your ideas.

I am a 36 year old male. I have been on Oxycodone (Immediate Release Oxycodone, which is percocet, without asperin in it). Just straight Oxycodone. I have been on it for about 2 years. Taking 120mg per day, once a day in the AM.

About 2 months ago, I started taking Oxycontin. For the first month, I was taking 120mg, once a day. Then, the second month, I have been taking 240mg, 3 times per day. Don't ask me how I jumped up that high...

So for the last 30 days, I have been taking 240mg of Oxycontin, 3 times per day.

I went to a doc, he gave me sample suboxone, told me to stop the oxycontin and in the AM, (24 hrs after my last dose of oxycontin), to take 1 Suboxone pill(I believe it is 5 mg...it is a light tan pill). He told me to let it disolve under my tongue. He said if it doesn't help, take another right away, and if I need another later in the day, take it, but if not, just try to take 1 per day in the AM, only if I need it.

So here is what I did? I took my regular 240mg of oxycontin the AM. I didnt have ANYTHING else for the rest of the day, or evening. This was a shock because I thought I was hooked, and I thought my body would start to go crazy! but it didn't! (Maybe I am not too deep in it and maybe I can get out!)

So in the AM the next day, i felt very bad, shakes, etc etc, and i took just 1 40mg oxycontin, and it made me feel better! I was good all day, and the next day, I felt bad when I woke up again, so I took 1 40mg oxycontin!

I am on my 3rd day, and the same thing happened!

So I never took the suboxone. I am wondering if I can ween myself off of the oxycontin?
Since I am taking 1 40mg pill per day, I think I may cut it in half and try a 20mg tomorrow morning.

i am trying to do this without taking that suboxone. i am scared i will get hooked on that and won't be able to quit it. the doc told me that most people who get on suboxone never stop.

can someone tell me, am I doing the right thing?

Will I be able to ween myself off of the oxycontin this way?

Can I hurt myself by doing it this way?

ALSO: Since I have been taking the oxycontin, my right ankle has swelled up. It has been like this for the past 30 days.
Any ideas of why it is like this? I assume it is because of the oxycontin? Is this a side effect of the medicine?

Also: This HURTS me to ask, and I am afraid to read the answer to this: I didnt realize it, but 240mg 3x per day is WAY too much. Someone told me that is WAY above the maximum amt per day.

Can someone tell me: is it possible that I have done some damage to my kidney/liver? PLEASE don't scare me! I have only been on this high dose for 30 days. I am so scared. Should I get blood tests done?

For some reason, the last few days, I have had lower back pain, both sides. I take tylenol and it stops the pain. Is it possible that my organs are shutting down? PLEASE dont scare me! I am scared to read the answer to this one...

And for anyone reading this msg board, thinking about getting into percocet or oxycontin, i hope you see how it shatters people's lives...don't get into it!! STAY AWAY from these pills! They are so addicting and shoud be outlawed!

Thanks and I will be checking for answers. I ASK GOD, JESUS, and YOU to help me get through this.

GOD BLESS!

The Fisherman

I personally have never been on sub but have read some horror stories about getting off of it. Most say to use it as a last resort. It sounds like you are doing a great job on tapering off the oxycontin. If you plan on continuing to taper make sure you stick to it. You don't want to take 40 mg one day then take 80 mg the next. Stay on a dose until your body gets used to the withdrawals and then cut back some more. I think they recommend cutting back by 10% every 5 days. I would let your body do the talking though because I don't feel there is a need to take it too slow as long as you can handle a faster taper. If you have been on 40 mg a day for awhile you may be able to go cold turkey. But, since you have been tapering, I would continue until you get down to the lowest dose possible. If you ever find yourself getting away from the taper and taking more, I would def go cold turkey.
Some things that help with the withdrawals are drinking plenty of fluids, eating healthy, exercise, hot baths, reading, movies, etc. The worst of the physical part is usually over within 5 to 7 days for most. I think what helped me the most was the exercise. I know it may seem impossible to do so but force yourself even if it is just a short walk around the block. On the right hand side of the screen under the "health pages" there is the amino acid protocol. It lists some vitamins and supplements that can help our body recover from opiate abuse. I know taking these did help me. Be sure to get on here, read like crazy, and post as much as you need. There are some wonderful people on here that will not judge and give you some of the best advice out there. Just having this forum as support really helps keep you motivated to continue the fight with the physical and mental aspects of the withdrawals.
As for your organs, I highly doubt you have done any damage yet. In the past I was taking high doses of hydrocodone and way to much apap or tylenol. I had a liver function test done and it came back fine. I was scared as he!! to hear the results! I would def go get that checked out just to keep you from worrying. It's amazing how much abuse our bodies can take. Even if there is damage if it is caught early enough it can usually be taken care of. I wouldn't worry though.
Just stay mentally strong and keep a positive attitude. There have been many people that have made it through withdrawals and you're no exception. You've tapered very fast so far and that proves you have it in you! If you need anything, don't hesitate to ask. I'll say a extra prayer for you! Take care and best of luck!

Just re-reading your post. I am thinking that your kidney's and liver are just working overtime, and they are trying to tell you that they don't like what you are putting them through. In my first reply I said drink lots of water, and I think you should like, triple the amount of water you are taking, it will help to flush out your system and keep your liver/kidneys happy!

Tylenol might not be a good idea to take for the pain you are experiencing, it's sorta like taking tylenol after drinking alcohol probably, not a good idea. There are a lot of people here who are very knowledgeable about various things, so maybe someone can provide a little more insight as to why your ankle has swollen up.

When you are withdrawing, it may feel like you are ready to die, but trust me, you won't. If you doubt that just take a look at all the people here, alive and well, dealing (very well, I might add) with their recovery.

What about trying to taper off first? Before trying the suboxone? It is worth the attempt, since like you said you don't want to get addicted to that. Whether you think you can or you can't, you are right!

Don't stress about the liver damage yet, but if you keep on this way (and at that dose), you can be guaranteed liver and/or kidney damage/failure. Just to calm your mind and fears, go ahead and have the tests done to determine if there is damage right now, and you'll be glad to find that there isn't (yet).

As for the swollen ankle, it could just be a reaction to something, as I have never heard of this before.

My dad has been on various narc's for over 20 years, so that's another reason I know you are okay (for now).

First of all, I doubt your organs are shutting down. I know two people who did way more than you and didn't have their organs shut down. Drink LOTS of water.
