Pregnancy and percocet

Hi, just wondering if anyone had to take any pain meds while pregnant? If so was everything ok with your baby? I have been on pain meds for about 5 years( 6 pills a day) and got pregnant unexpectedly! I also am additicted to the pain meds not out of choice! I wish I would have never ever taken them but needed them from surgery(If i only knew then what I know now).

My doctor does prescribe my pain meds and is aware of my pregnancy however Im sure he is not aware of my addition or maybe he is...not sure....once youve been on pain meds that long Im sure everyone is additicted.

My main question here is the first sentence. Thank you for any help you can provide....thank you much

Although some of us are holier than thou and can endure extreme amounts of pain and take on the term of martyr during pregnancy...however, some of us cannot. Not all of us that use "lose the desire". I get extremely annoyed when people say your supposed to suffer throughout an entire pregnancy. Please do not take this as a go ahead to abuse percocet during pregnancy. No one knows the risks of taking anything during pregnancy.

With that being said, you need to be honest with your doctor and with yourself. Being addicted but not by choice really isn't a great excuse to use while pregnant. You really need to sit down and assess the situation, and figure out what you need to do. Do you want to suffer for an entire pregnancy wondering if your baby is okay because you have been using percocet the entire time? Take it from me, you don't want to do it. During my first pregnancy I abused xanax off and on and by the grace of God my daughter came out okay. I'm pregnant again, and only had one slip because I just couldn't go through that guilt again. Pregnancy is hard enough...you don't not want to make it worse.

When I found out I was pregnant with my second child I got a therapist immediately. That helped immensely...more than you can imagine. It's still a struggle but I get through it, and so can you. Try your best to wean yourself and try to find another way manage your pain. In the long run it will be best for both you and your baby...before and after he/she is born.

The main risk factor is exposing your baby to the opiate. If your baby goes through the pregnancy exposed to the Percocet it will most likely have to withdrawal from it when it is born... is the doctor that is prescribing you the medicine your OB or your family medicine doc? Primary docs treat the patient- OB docs treat the pt AND the baby- so most OB's would recommend you taper off the medicine for the baby's sake.

Some of the withdrawals symptoms the baby can experience are:
shaky
increased muscle tone
sleeplessness
rapid respiratory rate
irritability
seizure

I would not just stop taking the meds cold turkey- you definately need to taper off them so that the baby doesn't experience the w/d symptoms- make sure and contact your OB so they can help with a taper schedule.

Good luck and congratulations!

I was disgnosed with Endo during my last pregnancy and had to take pain meds, My doctor knew he was the one who had me on them, I never took to many and only took when when I couldnt stand the pain. There is a risk that the baby will have WD symptoms and it can really put that little one through hell. If i were you I would talk to your doctor and tell him that you want off of them. Are you wanting to stop? Its so risky taking them while pregnant, My daughter was born in 2004 and was so perfect but there are so many that arent, Good luck
