Question about Skelaxin??

My doc just gave me Skelaxin for my back pain and said it might help.  I have been trying to cut back taking hydro and I don't want to take anything that is going to make me woosey.  I started into therapy last week and it is really making my back hurt.  The nurosurgeon I saw said I have from L-1 to S-1 messed up and he does not think surgery would help any.  So he just said take the hydro because your not taking that many (only 3 a day 7.5) and try this Skelaxin and let me know in 3 months how your doing.

I have really tried to cut back on the hydro but my back hurts so bad it wakes me up (when I can sleep).  Please let me know if any of you have had any experence with this for back spasms.  Thanks.

Skalaxin NEVER did a thing for me.  I got no relief using it (I have degenerative disc disease, 2 bulging discs and a herniated disc) and it never made me "feel" anything.
The best muscle relaxer I know of for me is flexeril (cyclobenzaprene).  It comes in 10 mg (flexeril) and 15 mg (amrix).  It really helps me but when I take it, I go to sleep.  I don't get a funny feeling and I don't get spaced out. I just get really tired really fast so I only take it at night on bad days and stick to 800mg ibuprofen and/or naproxen, sometimes medrol, which is a steroid..

Skelaxin I got prescribed when I got in a car accident for a muscle relaxer, It didnt really do much of anything but make me feel like gumby, drunk and out of it. Its not for chronic or severe pain BUT it is for MUSCLE pain, like muscle spasms. From being a former EMT (Paramedic) I know it works in the brain to help with the relaxation of muscle pain, its also used for physical therapy with people with back problems. Try it out for a week, see how it works, its not a type of medication that u need to keep taking for it to work, it works right away. But make sure it ifs not working that you get on the correct type of pain medication for your back and I am saying this because my mother has buldged(spelling) discs in her cervical spine and bone spurs and fibromyalgia (a muscle disorder) and the muscle relaxers didnt help her too much, but everyone is different. just my advice to you...I wish you you the best of luck <3

Thanks avisg, do you think it would be useful to use to detox from hydro?  Do you think it would help stop the wanting to run anound the room and bounce off the walls at night?  When I get back from this business trip I am going to stop these things but in the mean time I am still cutting back so it won't be as hard.

I've had the injections but not a blocker.  I haven't heard of that before.  I asked the nuro if maybe the orthro doc didn't get the injection in the right place and if I decided to do it again would he do it and they said they refer it out.  I got a brace too but it is just not supporting me in the lower back where I need it too.  I am doing this therapy and I hope I can get myself back in shape and maybe that will help too.  Thanks for your reply and I agree the Skelaxin does make me feel kind of heavy.  I have only taken it at night.  I wonder if it would help to wd from the hydro since I don't have any valiume (sp)?

Haven't had any experience with Skelaxin, but just wanted to ask if you've had any steroid blocker injections?  I think that's what it is called.  My husband had been having severe back spasms and just had this blocker injection done two weeks ago.  Two days after the injection he was good as new and it's still working.  My husband couldn't sleep either, woke up in the middle of the night, etc.  Good luck to ya!

I was prescribed that. Its a muscle relaxer. I did not like it at all. It gave me an "out of control" feeling like being a little drunk. It made me feel "heavy" too. Like my legs weighted a ton.  Thats what it did to me. I hope it works for you.
