Quitting coffee

Hey all,

I am a graduate student in college, and because of some recent problems with my eyes, I have decided to go on a healthy diet which I am hoping it would help with not only my eyes, but my overall health. I wasn't big into alcolhol, so not having beer wasn't a big issue, but I have noticed that without coffee, I require a lot of sleep, and just generally feel really lazy.

Any easy way out?

I have always tried to get addicted to coffee and just can't seem to fine the time.

If you eat an apple in the morning it will give you as much energy as a cup of coffee.  Then do what athena said but also add B-12.  If you have heard of Advocare then you can order Spark.  It has all the pick me up vitamins plus amino acids that give you energy.  About 60% of athletes today use some sort of Advocare supplement, included is my 10 year old daughter who does six hours a day of gymnastics six days a week.  She asks for supplements, esp spark.

I know. I lived by myself since the beginning of highschool and I have never been involved in any drugs. I am very lucky compared to some people I know. Self control I guess.

But this coffee thing, it's having quite an effect on me since it's hard to study well without it.

Hey, no worries. This is an addiciton forum and you have every right to post about your struggles w/ quitting coffee.

From what I've heard and experienced in the past, you may experience fatigue and headaches for up to 10-14 days, then things will smooth out. Toward the end of this period, some of this may be psychological, nevertheless it happens. Drink lots of water and try to eat well during this time. Some B6 (100's) and C (1000) might also help.

I know exactly what you're talking about. I drink anywhere from 10-14 cups a day. It's not the only thing I have been addicted to but I was able to put other things down like coke, after years and it has been 4 years. No urge for it, it is disgusting to me but I love my coffee, I am not trying to stop drinking it but I do realize the effects it has on me. Guess that's why we should say no the first time, to harder things than we've already done. You're not lucky, there is no such thing as luck or coincidences. You just made a good choice unlike some of us. Vitamins, good diet and lots of water maybe, for natural energy. Well good luck and God Bless!!

Hey....i'll trade you a percocet and a dilaudid for a cup of coffee.....lol...sorry...I couldn't pass it up.....lmao...

Seriouse though...I have tried to quit drinking coffee at times also.....it is hard. what helped was changing my habits (routines). Like in the morning when I drank the most coffee i'd go for a walk, or just sit outside and meditate for 20 min. or so.   Another time I weaned down to the 1/2 and 1/2 coffee. It seemed better than nothing....than eventually off that too.  Good luck. Post here anytime...it IS an addiction forum.

And I will say another thing....I have detoxed and quit MANY different drugs and alcohol....they all have chemical and mental effects....The one drug that I can never conquer...is cigarettes.  I can go through hell to get off heroin, percocets etc....and finaly suceed....but nicotine wins. Coffee was a battle also.

This may seem wierd, but since i have quit using pills the past 5 days, my cigarette smoking has decreased also.

I never realized it until now when I was reading this thread of posts.  That's wierd.

BUT I AINT GIVIN THEM UP....lol....not for a while.

I did give them up 3 times and stayed off them for 2yrs each time.  Then got ticked about something and went and bought a pack.  

That is my greatest fear is that I will do the same with the pills....ugggg

Thanks for the help guys. Like some of you probably know, it's tough!

I am a full time graduate student in industrial engineering, and a recreational body builder. Not only I use coffee to wake myself up in the morning, but caffine before working out also helped a lot.

Without coffee, it's hard to stay awake in lectures, to concentrate on the textbooks, and teaching undergraduate labs. Plus for the pask week that I stopped drinking coffee, my workout has also suffered, we're talking about 40lbs on squats for example.

I'll keep myself away from coffee and do what you guys suggested. Lots of water and B12. Thanks for the tips, they'll make my life a lot easier.

Look up the Master Cleanse on google.. my hubby used it to detox from coffee and cigarettes.. he said he slept better on it than off of it.. had so much energy wasn't groggy in the morning.. its supposed to curb cravings for anything your body finds "toxic" i can send it to you if you like.. Beyonce did it before Dreamgirls and lost 20 lbs.. my hubby has done it twice.. lost 13 lbs the first time and now he is down to 227 he was 275 last summer with high blood pressure and high cholesterol..

I really hate to be so blunt...I'm sorry sweetie...if quitting coffee is your only problem, you should count your blessings.  Wish that was the only thing I had to worry about quitting.
