Ritalin Addiction and abuse

My shrink put me on ritalin 20 mg 3 times a day.  Right off the bat I started snorting it.  My friends told me I would really get off doing it that way.  Then my shrink quites and I get a new one and he said no way ritalin for me.  But I conviced him that I needed it for my job(which I do) so he lets me have 1 per day.  Well as soon as I left his office I came home and called my family doctor and asked him if he would perscribe me my ritalin and he said yes!  Now I'm snorting 5 to 7 per day, then going through withdrawls for 2 weaks of night sweats, can't sleep, have fatigue, call in to work sick. (I can only miss 1 more day) I'm just a depressed mess until I get my new script.  And I try not do over 3 a day but I make up exuses that I'll do a couple more, then at the end of the month I just do 1 or 2 a day to last the full month.  But it doesn't happen.  I'm in trouble.  I really need it for my job and fatigue.  How can I staighten myself up and only take 3 a day?

In my past when I was young , me and a few friends started snorting it , when I finally stopped snorting it , I was diagnosed with add , not sure if snorting it has made u more add than u should be but , I refused a script for Ritalin and have been living with add ever since! Everyone is different but u may be able to break free from Ritalin and still live normal as well! hope u find a good solution!!!

Wow ! Are stories about the same with that drug . 1996 I am diagnosed with Adult ADHD . Taking the same dose you are . Turn the clock ahead and it is starting to give me bad anxiety ! Long story short dr. tells me just to stop so I did . 5 days later laying in bathtub and get my first panic attack of my life . Didn't know what was happening to me . Scared to death lost 20lb. in two weeks Was the worst event in my life . Ritalin is BAD news and I will never take that again . It took me almost two months to start feeling normal again . That is a nasty drug . Please look for alternatives for your ADHD . I don't take anything and I am doing just fine ..Good luck . Jimmy

Hi..If you are getting a Buzz from it and using it to stay a wake then it does not sound like ADD..This med is suppose to do the opposite. If the Head Dr said one then I am curious why you are getting so out of control..Do you get Buzzed up from it???

Are you willing to seek some help with this?  I think that's the best bet.  It's good that you've reached out here for help and that you realize that you've got a problem.  That's a good starting place!

Where you prescribed this in the begging because they thought you had a Attention Disorder?? I was buying my Adderral off the streets and snorting it with my Methadone..SmilingBright hit it right on the nail!!!! Oh ya at first with the dones I would get the buzz and get everything done at the same time.."Compulsive Behavior" and then I did turn to psycho woman just like SmilingBright..Then I went c/t from those 2 meds plus the benzo I took at night..I am telling you the w.d from the adderral is more of a mental  with draw then anything...That Drug also plays Havoc on the Nervous system and I heard that from a Head Dr..So I would really consider seeing a DR and get some Help..This is a serous drug too if it is not used for the purpose it was made for..

Hello there!

There are several issues with what you're doing.  One, you're abusing the medication, which indicates you have an addiction problem.  There are many things you are doing that is textbook addict behavior.  For that reason, it would be highly unlikely (and a bad idea) to try to continue taking this med AT ALL.  It's very unlikely after abusing it, using it recreationally, that you will be able to stick to a prescribed amount.

Another issue with what you're doing is you're breaking the law by getting a controlled substance from two physicians.  That's called drug seeking, and you could get in trouble, charged with doctor shopping.

The other problem with abusing your prescription is that you're not addressing the condition for which it was Rx'ed in the first place.  That's something you're going to need to do, and from here on out, without any kind of habit-forming medication.

You need to seek some help with this.  You're on a slippery slope, and you're smart to be concerned about what you're doing, as it will lead you nowhere good.  The thing is, in order to be successful in recivery, you have to first admit that you have a problem.  It doesn't sound like you're really ready to do that.

I would recommend seeking out some professional addiction recovery help....you can start that by being honest with your doctor, explain what you've been doing, and ask for help.  I know it isn't an easy thing to do, but you have to start somewhere.  Eventually, one or both of the docs will find out anyway, because of the double scripts...and if that happens without you being honest with them, you stand to be in some serious trouble unfortunately.

Best of luck to you...we're here to help you!  Hope you let us!

Hey,
Just telling you from my experience w this stuff.  I used to be prescribed adderall several years ago. When I first started taking it , it was the best kept secret.   (so u thought). It gave me energy and made me social.  (in the beginning). Then it slowly but surely grabbed a hold of me and made me crazy, paranoid, and psycho!!  Seriously.  Finally I broke free from that horrible addiction. But it was Heck trying to do it.  Once it grabbed a hold of me I thought I would never get lose of it!!  Thank God I broke free!!  Praying u will see the light.

I know u think it gives u the energy u need to get thru your work day.  But please just think about the day it turns on u.  Bc it usually does.  Don't take that the wrong way.

Just trying to share my horrible experience w u so u won't have to endure the sAme that I did.

How long have u been taking it?
Chris

You can't.  Not without drug counseling.  You don't sound as if you are ready to really do that at this point.  That worries me.  Another solution is to have someone you trust hold your ritalin and ONLY give you what you are supposed to have for the day.  Blessings - Blu
