Suboxone what people think

Ok guys I read the argument and it sort of offended me. I came here just wanting some info on suboxone. I didn't expect to find doctors or trained therapist. I came here to find people like me to say what was on my mind, what my fears are, has anyone had feeling or effects form meds like I have. I wanted down to earth honest addicts to speak their wisdom on their experiences with their personal self. Most of us coming here know, that a doctor is usually always the best expert to ask. Yeah maybe a specific field of medicine. I am not taking advice and applying to my personal health unless I think it would benefit me. I know not to mix certain medicines, and actually and pretty up on my own dr terms. I am a addict I have read literature, articles and take what I think is best from them. I am big enough to take others opinions of certain drugs such as suboxone. We do not all think the same and to be honest I don't know if I made the right choice when I choose suboxone. I actually have doubts, but I actually have hope also. I recommend this site to others for support, strength and fascinating people. Now you are all up in the air over ones words. Doesn't make much sense to me. I appreciate everyone's opinons. I don't want to open a question and hear all the arguments. I can find that argument at home. I am here for support speaking without feeling labeled. So get back to business and help others.

I have been taking Suboxone o fo about 7 months. It has set me free. It helps my back pain and enables me to live a normal life without being labled a druggie. I have chronic back pain and was taking oxycodone. For those of you that are worried about getting hooked just know this. It's great benefit is that it's effects last for more than 24 hours and only one dose of 8mg per day is needed(about $5 a day) my tolerance to oxycodone was thru the roof and I could not get enough. I was spending money buying it on the street having to chase around to get. Those days are over. Thank you to whoever founded this miracle medicine. I owe them my life. No kidding!

Thanks for posting!

You will find a lot of mixed opinions on the use of suboxone, and not to sound ignorant, but the only opinion that matters is.... your own! :-)

Its a very personalized decision to begin suboxone treatment, and like everything else in this world, it has its pros and cons. (as you are already finding out)

From the sounds of it, your symptoms sound a lot like what I was experiencing when I detoxed off of sub.  I was maintained for 2.5 years at 16mgs, coming off of a 7 year methadone treatment.  I CT'd off of sub on May 18, 2010.  My last dose was 3mgs.

Have you gotten in contact with your sub provider?  Is he willing to help?  Also, how long have you been in treatment, and what dose are you currently at?

In my own experience, I was pleased withh sub.  It did what it was supposed to, and gave me a reprieve from the constant withdrawal, and obsessing behavior that comes with drug abuse.  I used this reprieve to focus on my recovery, and got into an active recovery care program (Essential for successful sub treatment)  Once I worked on all those little intricacies of life, I felt I was strong enough to take the leap off.

It wasnt easy, and the wd's lingered for almost a month.  But it was nothing like CT off a full agonist.  I got up everyday, worked out, and went to work. Which was quite a feat as I am currently working as an International Flight Attendant.  Actually, most of my detox was completed while I was overseas away from my friends and family.  Not the most pleasant, but totally manageable.

I decided to go the sub route, as I was on high dose methadone.  400+ milligrams daily, and the 6 month wd period off the methadone was not something that I could do, I saw relapse in my future.  For some users on short acting opiates, they just choose to CT, because they will be almost over the hump with the worst of the wd's from their DOC by the time they induce onto sub.  Not so much the case with long acting opiates.

I had a great sub doc that listened to me and what my body was telling myself and him, and we developed a treatment plan together.  And that was integral to my personal success with the treatment.

If I ever feel that I am at risk to going back, I would not think twice about getting back into sub treatment again.  For me, my life is worth that!

Keep us posted, and I hope you are feeling better soon!

I just wanted to correct a few things about your post.  And clarify the difference between Subutex/ Suboxone.  You are indeed correct that the Subutex formulation  does NOT contain any naloxone like the Suboxone does, however the reason it is there is often misunderstood.

Naloxone is an opiate antagonist.  It will reverse the effects of opiates and indeed have a blockade effect on the Opiate (Mu) receptors. It is the drug that we use on the ambulance in overdose situations (Narcan).  Naloxone has a terrible bioavailability when taken orally.... almost non existent. Which is why we push it IV while on the rig.

When taken trans mucosally (As in Suboxone) the Naloxone has no effect on the Mu receptors.  Naloxone was added to the Suboxone formulation for one purpose only.... to deter the misuse of Suboxone by the IV route.  When users misuse suboxone via IV, the naloxone is activated and will put the user into precipitated withdrawals.

The buprenoprhine in both combinations is a combined agonist/antagonist- Menaing it will activate those mu receptors as well as block them.  It is a very unique drug.  Buprenorphine in itself can cause withdrawals in users that are already taking other opiates.... which is why you must wait the 36-48 hrs before your induction.  A patient must be in mild to moderate withdrawal before beginning induction onto both suboxone OR Subutex!!!!!

Due to the properties of buprenorphine, even subutex will produce the blackade effect, just as the suboxone would.  When taken properly, both drugs work identically.  Its just that some people (Ie pregnant) have a sensitivity to Naloxone....

Just thought I could clarify!

Best Regards,

I am already on suboxone. I am on my 16th day. I went ct off vics and soma in April. Had problems staying dope sick. I read literature and done research first it scared me but when dope sick stayed I was relapsing and decided suboxone could give some promising results. I am having some vomiting and tingling like RLS in my arms and legs. I am doing great on it other than that. I really didn't understand the sub like I thought I did. So I am having doubts about my decision and also some hope with it. Just a little freaked out over it. Need to get with my doctor and discuss my fears.

Not sure what offened you and I just found this site today.  If ur going to a dr to get suboxone they will probably start u on subutex, both are bupenorphine(sp?)but suboxone contains nalotrexone(sp??) which is supposedly "the blocker".  Bottom line, in my opinion, suboxone is a great start to recovery BUT the addict is still ultimately responsible for getting and staying clean.  I'm still in the battle myself, u can't cold turkey suboxone either and I slipped up as I was weaning off.  I mentioned the subutex because u don't have to wait 36-48 hrs to start the process, u start taking it as soon as wd sets in.  Best of luck!!!

I went cold turkey off a 400+mg/day oxy addiction and did surprisingly well. The reason I didn't want suboxone was twofold. First, I was tired of having drugs run my life. I didn't want to get off one drug just to have to get off another and I was tire of depending on drugs to make it through the day. Secondly, I saw a few of my friends use it and getting off subs was twice as hard as getting off oxy concerning wds. Also, none of them stayed clean because hey still had that addict mentality of 'I don't like the way I feel, so take a pill.'

It can be done without it as is evident by the many people who do not use subs and, for me, one set of withdrawals seemed a lot better than two.

I cannot tell you anything about suoxone other than what I have seen with a few friends and my decision not to use it because I didn't want to have to WD from it. I really considered doing it mainy from fear of WD, but as I understood it, you have to be off of painpills for 36-48 hours before taking suboxone or it would make me really sick (that is what I was told by my Dr.) may or may not be right. After 3 years of heavy opiate use I had it built up in my mind that I was going to be in sheer hell for a week or so. By the time I couldve taken suboxon, I was thru the worst of it. I just decided to bite the bullet. It sounds like you have done alot of research and just need to do whats best for you. I was healthy enough to go CT, my Dr. confirmed that for me and gave me clondine to help. I dont know if that helps, it is just what I know first hand. Best of luck to you. Welcome to the forum.
