Taper or Cold Turkey

I have been on oxycodone all different varieties and milligrams for 7 years now. I started after a gun shot wound and got hooked without knowing it. I quit taking them three years ago and got on subutex. It did wonders so I thought. My doctor prescribing the subutex would not take me off them so after 2 YEARS of 16mg a day of subutex I had enough and quit myself I tapered off over a course of 1 month and the withdrawal was really rough but I did it. Right after I got off within a week I found a tumor on my knee. Tests showed it was cancerous so here I went again down the hell ride of painkillers. They took the tumor out and I needed no further treatment thank GOD. But I was stuck with the addiction all over again. Now I am trying so hard to quit but I find it so much harder I dont know why. I hate everything and I am a monster when I'm detoxing. I dont know what to do this time because I dont want the subutex anymore It really screwed up my body but the detox is awful. Im down to 15 to 30 mg of roxi a day and dont know if cold turkey or keep tapering is the answer please help please I cant do this alone. any input is greatly appreciated GOD BLESS YOU ALL

Hi there!  I say taper. It's a lot easier on your body and, really, most doctors suggest it.

Find your average dose per day and cut a very small amount of it out. Go slowly and as the days go by don't drop again until your body adjusts. That's all I can safely say here. Drop small amounts over a long period of time. Drink a lot, eat well, and eat your vegetables! Fruits are great, too!

Take a muti vit with minerals and be sure to exercise. You can do this and you'll feel a lot better when you're off the pills!

Keep posting to us with any questions...we're here for you!

Hi there and welcome!! Wow it sounds like you've been through a lot!! You've come to the right place for help/support. Admitting you have a problem is the 1st step, and often the hardest. Many people here are for going cold turkey. I however,am not. I believe that you should safely taper down before stopping. I take it that you will be doing this on your own vs. with a doctor's help? That being said,we can't offer any taper schedules as the site won't permit it. I prefer tapering as your body doesn't get such a drastic shock immediately. There is some useful info on our "Health Pages" (when you scroll all the way to the bottom of the page.Look for "The Thomas Recipie"). The Thomas Recipie works wonders. You need a few ingrediants though. Definatelky stock up on Imodium, whether you go cold turkey or taper you'll need it. And plenty of fluids!! Stay strong and you can do this!! Here to help...
