Thomas Recipe - Hydrocodone

Hey Everyone,
Please excuse me if these ae stupid questions but at the beginning of the Thomas Recipe it states, "If you can't take time off to detox, I recommend you follow a taper regimen using your drug of choice or suitable alternate -- the slower the taper, the better." He is obviously speaking of hydrocodone....right? Why would you taper off of an alternate if the drug of choice was hydrocodone? Is he speaking of any opiate?
Why would you need the Thomas Recipe if you have the strength to do a very slow taper? Do you end up needing it regardless once you stop completely?...or is the Thomas recipe designed only to stop cold turkey? Is it recommended to stop anywhere from 25-40 10/320 Norcos per day CT? How gnarly would that be to the average person?
Me personally, would require a high dose of benzos to induce sleep because I already am on a taper schedule for Xanax and have crossed over to Valium. Should I just do a side thing for the hydro taper after day 4-5 and resume my regular benzo taper? Will the extreme anxiety spoken of as a side effect go away after day 4-5.
I noticed the last time (yes I'm an idiot) I stopped I could not get out of bed anyway for the first two days and just slept. I don't believe I even used benzos. Is that normal?
Almost forgot, yesterday I took probably 20 hydros and had extreme chills in the middle of the night. Has anyone ever experienced that and what could that have been? That was a first for me. Also, I have been waking up with pain just under my rib cage which obviously goes away with the hydrocodone. Is that related to it? I've never experienced that before either.
Any other advice/insight would be much appreciated.

Hey amzy22,

I didn't notice your one post. Thank you so much for your support. The hydros I'm going to do alone but the Valium I am doing a monitored taper with a Dr. I can't wait to be done with all of it. The thin that seems to keep setting me back is so much pain in my past and current stress. I have a TON of stressful things going on in my life.
Thanks for your kind words of support. You sound like a good compassionate person the way you looked after your boyfriend. You should think about cutting out the Xanax completely and if you're taking it regularly you need to taper with a Dr. I've attached a link to a site that shows and exact schedule using a cross over method to Valium since it's weaker with a longer half-life: http://www.benzo.org.uk/manual/bzcha01.htm. You should consider an SSRI or something along those lines that don't mess you up in the long run. You are so young don't keep going down that road. Sorry to preach but I wish I would have done it when I was 22. Xanax and all benzos are too dangerous. You can over come the phobias etc. Thanks again for your kind words and you will be in my prayers!!!

I totally agree with everything you said!!! I'm an addict and don't need them for physical pain but for emotional pain; which I obviously need to deal with differently. I feel for people with chronic pain!

Thomas was talking about opiates in general. Methadone is a different creature in many respects. ZAlso, someone above said that none of these drugs are for "long term use". that is far from the truth. True chronic pain is just that, chronic. It doesn't go away. That's why there's 80mg Oxy's (actually there was a 160mg at one time...geez talk about dangerous). It's why people have spinal induced morphine pumps. Some people do NEED many of these drugs to function every day. In most cases, dependence turns into addiction...but when the alternative is no life, then the choice is easy. Sorry for the rant, but it makes me mad sometimes when us addicts deem ever person taking any opiate or benzo an addict regardless of their medical history. OK, I'm off my soapbox now.

Thanks for your feedback. As you can tell I obviously blew it and started up again. Only for two months or so....something like that. Typo on length of use. You are right, we are so different and each time stopping varies. I feel so different this time. It's actually so much worse. You know how they say us addicts pick up where we left off. We never get to go back to the beginning. I believe that for sure now. I feel absolutely awful and trying to taper till Dec. 31 then Jan 1st, that's all she wrote no matter how hard it is. I've done it before so I can again. By the way, why the pain under my rib cage in the middle of the night? It lasts until I take one or two. Is that my liver??? I've had that for the last two nights and the chills just last night.. The chills were pretty bad. Any ideas miss nurse?
Please don't be ashamed of me and don't think I'm weak. I'm not...I can't even tell you how this happened. Well, actually I can but I'd rather go into it on private email if you want to hear. I actually tried to call you and someone answered that didn't speak English. Did you change your  number?

well...maybe thomas meant that if you have to wait for time off then taper..i tapered/quite poorly for 10 days til my long weekend...but even if u do a slow taper the recipe is very helpful..it is to be used for a while after detox and to this day i still take 5htp, tyrosine, phenylalanine and theanine.....i went back to work day 5..no high anxiety but fatigue...we are all different..if you are a high anxiety person by nature then that is not going to go away just because you quit your DOC....in fact if you have a history of panic attacks etc then it may worsen..hard to say as we are all different..but these are the reasons it is good to take a few days off...dose and length of use, DOC, all come into play as well

some drugs need to be tapered due to safety and health risk like trams and benzos..it is also extrememly uncomfortable to CT methadone...keep posting

I'm so sorry that you're feeling this way. It's soo good that you are trying to get off of these benzos though. It will be hard. I had to take care of my boyfriend for about three months while he went through his withdrawls. I felt so bad for him. He would sweat all night, the sheets and stuff would just be soaked! He had a lot of insomnia too. Sometimes he would sleep for days...and other nights he couldnt sleep at all! He stopped taking xanax cold turkey though. About 12 plus mgs a day!! You sound like you are taking all the right steps to making yourself better, happier, and healthier. I have some things in my past that I still havent delt with... and sometimes I wonder if that's why I have such an addictive personality.

I do take things to party every once in a while. (im 22) lol. But I have severe anxiety and everytime I go to the doctor they tell me im add and give me something to speed my *** up, which makes it worse! I know I need xanax! It's the only thing that makes me right. Sometimes I can't even walk into wal mart because there's too many ppl, it freaks me out. Just things like that. I play doctor with myself and that's not good, i know. Enough about me though.

No need to apologize. I know what you meant now. I only asked because you sound smart but I guess we're both a little stupid for continuing to take stuff and have to feel like hell after wards. I do take it recreationally. I want off but it recommends Valium to get through the hard part. I think you're right about the chills and the Valium last night. I couldn't sleep and took a couple more here and there to try to sleep. I'm not necessarily the party type guy but realize I take it to try to feel better and make my past go away. That's why I have to stop and move forward and deal with things. I guess I medicate more than party.

ok....i just read all of your messages. lol. They are talking about methadone. If people get to where they are taking a lot of methadone, they HAVE to be monitored by a doctor and tapered off of it! I lost an uncle to that ****! They're talking about opiates for sure. You should be able to do something yourself about the hydros. That's good that you are not taking the xanax anymore! Really good! Valium isnt good for you either though...Once you're totally off of benzos, you will feel so much better! You're on your way!

I didnt mean it like that. you said something like "yes im stupid".... I know what you meant though, and I know neither one of us is stupid. Sorry I said that....

Ive been taking xanax off and on for two years. I have some withdrawls sometimes. But I'm also really smart and I dont just swallow 10 of them at a time, three times a day like some drug heads out there, ya know? Ill take like 2-4 mgs a night or something every once in a while. But still....even the little bits that i take....the chills and stuff are horrible! I'm sorry about what you're going through. You sound very smart, and you sound like you know what you need to do to feel better. Just stick with it! Try to find something else to help you sleep! Even a freakin muscle relaxer...anything but a benzo.

By the way, what I meant by I took a few in my last post was Valium, not Xanax.

My benzo taper is under the guidance of a Dr. but I don't think you need that  with hydro. Not sure if he's talking about Methadone either. I think he means any opiate if you can't get your hands on your drug of choice.

Why would you say we're not bright? Just curious.
I haven't taken Xanax in over six months but tapering off the valium. I did take a few to try to sleep so I think you might be right on that. I have benzos and once my taper is done I don't want those things in my life.

oh ya.... and i think they're talking about tapering off of methadone. You shouldnt do that yourself though. A doctor should always monitor you when you're coming off of anything like methadone, hydros, benzos, anything like that. I went through a pretty bad methadone withdrawl once.... i was only taking 10 mgs a day, Thank God. I had my mom watch me for a week...I layed around doing nothing, sweating, crying, having severe chills, and just hoping that my life would come back. It did...but anyways, hope this helps, because I didnt really understand some of your message....

I dont know if you are prescribed these medications or using them recreationally but none of them are meant for long term use. Im a "like to have fun girl." I take hydros quite often, methadone, a lot of XANAX, whatever...you know.... occassionaly! I can tell you right now that the chills are from xanax. It's the worst drug you can take. My boyfriend took them for about six months and ended up in the crazy part of the hospital! Everyone has different side effects from medications. But the xanax is the worst, I think. Of course, this is just my opinion. Try something besides a BENZO! <--- That's what's causing any insomnia, chills, feverish feelings, feeling lost, depression......

Hope this helps a little....im not the brightest either. lol!
