Tramadol Question

Hi guys,

It's been a couple of months since I posted, though I'm on here daily reading everyone's stories. Just to recap, in August, I went through two weeks CT from 180 mg Oxycontin a day...a pain managementioned thing.

After the acute WD's ended my pain increased and I renewed my prescription, giving my husband control of my meds. It worked ok, but I decided that I wanted to see if I could manage my pain with less medication. I talked to my pain doc last month and told him I wanted off the Oxy, and asked for a weaker medication. I can't take NSAID's due to a malfunctioning liver.

He wanted to try Tramadol, and because I'm too passive, I agreed despite reading about the horror stories of Tramadol WD on here. So last week, I filled my first Tramadol prescription.

I had no problem with transitioning from Oxycontin to Tramadol because I tapered way down on the Oxy. The Tramadol was okay in managing my pain, but over the past week, I've had terrible headaches. The headache is there 24/7. Does anyone have experience with this and know if the Tramadol is causing them? I didn't take any yesterday or today because I don't want   to get physically dependent on them. Tramadol withdrawal doesn't sound pleasant, and I just don't see this medication improving my quality of life at all.

So I haven't had any pain meds for almost 48 hours, and other than the awful headache and my normal pain issues, I have no WD symptoms. I was encouraged by this because I feel like I'm finally freeing myself from a ten-year physical dependence on pain meds. I don't feel like I have to run to my doctor for another medication now that I know Tramadol isn't for me. I am going to continue to push myself to work and function without pain meds because I never want to go back to having the meds rule my life. The chronic pain *****, but feeling trapped by Oxy is way worse now that I've made it through to the other side of withdrawals.

Sorry to ramble! Back to my original question. Is tramadol giving me these terrible headaches? And if so, any idea why?

Hi
Interestingly my story is pretty similar to yours as I was addicted to pills too and recently I transitioned to tramadol 100mg extended release and about a week after taking one or two a day, I had the EXACT same headaches you're talking about and feared that it was due to the tramadol (which I read can give headaches as a side effect) so I stopped and it's taken about a week for the headaches to subside but they ARE going away.
I personally believe that the tramadol was giving me rebound headaches so if I EVER touched that again I'd take it on a RARE occasion (even though funny enough I don't think it's as good to help relieve pain as codeine would even! So I don't touch it anymore)
Hope that helped! Fight through those headaches and if they're still there in a week or two maybe get yourself checked out :-)

Thanks everyone! The headache is still here, but thanks to the feedback, I'm not worried about it anymore.

Good luck in detox TramTrap! I have been through some rough times with other pain meds, but I'm very thankful that Tramadol wasn't for me!

Yes with that amount 300mg a day you can get a bad headache. I sure did. I head in Monday for detox to tramadol. Good luck and stay away. It's a nasty drug!

i was given hydromorphone after ankle surgery a few years back and it took me two days to realize my severe headaches were from the pill.....they told me i had to take a pill every six hours...my head killed...just as it would start to recover i would take a pill and soon...bam!...horrid headache....stopped pills headache gone....but....i took vicodin with no headache....and tramadol i would only get headache every other day or so....not sure why all that happened but no question the headaches were from the drugs

I forgot to mention how much Tramadol I was taking. I was prescribed four a day. They were 100mg tablets. I believe they are extended release. The most I took in one day in the past week was three. That's when the headache got worse and I put two and two together and realized that the Tramadol and migraine seemed to be related.

I'm not on any antidepressants. I knew that Tramadol has an SSRI in it, but I really don't know what SSRI means.

I definitely know what withdrawal feels like for me, and I know that the headaches aren't similar to any WD symptom I've ever had. Also, I only took the Tramadol for five days, so I know it's not WD from the Tram. The headache seemed to get more intense after I took a tramadol.

After getting Oxycontin out of my life, I'm just not willing to replace it with a drug (Tramadol) that everyone here knows will end badly. I should have told the doctor no, but I always try to be so agreeable with their suggestions. I feel like I'm a problem patient otherwise.

I will tell my doc about the headaches. In the meantime, I won't be taking anymore Tramadol.

Over the past decade, I dreamed of getting to a place where I could take or leave pain meds, rather than have my mind and body "need" them on a daily basis. Now that it's been two days without anything, I'm content with the fact that my mind isn't screaming for more. I don't want to go back to that way of life! I have no plans to go rushing back to the pain clinic for another med. I just want to take things one day at a time and learn to coexist with my chronic pain, rather than take medication that doesn't really help much anyway. I always said that the Oxycontin didn't remove the pain for me, it just made my brain not give a crud that my body was hurting.

I would love some encouragement from those who chose to ditch their pain "management" plans.

I also just wanted to know if anyone has had experience or knowledge about Tramadol and headaches. It's day three with this migraine, and I'm a bit worried about it not going away. I should have called my doctor before the weekend. I really thought it would be gone by today. With all of the bad stuff I see here about Tramadol, seuzures, etc., I just wanted to see if this crazy headache was something normal with Tramadol.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Pup.
Glad you posted. I just wanted to let you know that your post came out double, so I ask the other one to be removed.

Are you taking a AD med with the Trams? The trams have a chem in them that affects the Serotonin in our brain. It could be a bit of a w/d from the other med too since you switch them over, but I bet it has to do with the Trams.
Have you talked to the Dr about this..That would be a good idea. Other then that stick around for Support and jump in too!
Wishing you the best and we will be here for you all the way, if you do decide to come off of these for good. However, good job on having them handed out to you.
Bless
Vickie
