Tramadol

How does one withdraw from tramadol without being sedated.  Used it for many years.  Can take 20 a day.

You are so right Hobbum. It is not only humans that like to make themselves feel better. In studies with addicting drugs rats always picked the food with the drug rather than the food alone.they remember the good feeling the drug gives them and always choose it.I read that study a long time ago.In my opinion,as long as taking pain meds or whatever does not interfere or destroy your life or cause problems there really is no problem.A lot of people can not control themselves with these addicting, mood elevating drugs and they become a problem.Overuse is the problem, not controlled use.I have a couple of customers who are finding it difficult to stop taking even small doses of effexor.I asked them why do you want to stop...is it affecting your life in a bad way. Both said no but feel a stigma about taking antidepressants.I said where is the harm then, but do what you feel is right for your body.Effexor is a buggar to stop and must be tapered slowly.Tramadol has an effexor-like part in its molecule and that is why it has antidepressant effects.

First of all, I would have you try not to judge yourself (or heroin addicts) so harshly.  Let me just say this for the record regarding ALL ADDICTIONS:

This universe is not a nice place.  We never look very closely at it because if we did, it would shock us.  This is a place where everything exist solely from the destruction of something else.  From the big bang that made the universe, exploding super novas that make all the elements, exploding planets (volcanos) that create an atmosphere, and all the living things that cannot live without eating some fellow living being.  This is just for starters.  When you add humans into the mix, things get really ugly.

We are afraid of each other and afraid of ourselves.  We judge, we judge, and we judge.  We are perpetrators and victims in a cycle of attack and defense.  If we are
not attacking each other, we are attacking ourselves.

Our bodies are a failure by design.  This is made very clear by the fact that it gets old and dies.  It is vulnerable to everything from a microbe to an Uzi, a speeding train to an earthquake, a hangnail to a bag of chocolate.  Nothing is safe.  Nothing.  And worse by far (drum roll) is our obsession on how the body looks to other bodies.  Fortunes are made exploiting our pitiful body images.  We only want what someone else has.   Face it, we are not happy campers.

So we wonder why we take pills...    why we take comfort in food, sex, sleep, casinos,
or shopping.  The list is endless.  How dare we judge ourselves for simply wanting to feel better?  Because that is all we are doing.  We just want to feel better.  That's it.

So here is a practical approach to feeling better.  If what you are doing (taking pills, drinking, shopping, hoarding, over eating etc.) is causing problems and you want to stop, then ask for help.  If they are not causing problems to you or those near you, then do what ever makes you feel better.  We are not "sinners" here and  judging ourselves as such is never going to help.  You are no better or worse than anyone.  We all share the same need to feel better.

Like this message board, there are loads of places to seek help, comfort, and moral support from one another.  I am glad you are here and speaking up about your fears.
You are safe.   The first step is to forgive yourself, the rest will follow.
Blessings,  Hob

good luck I am there with you. I currently take 200 mg at a time with 15 mg vicoden, 2 flexeril, 2 lyrica pills and drink my coffee and do it 4 to 6 times a day. sane? my kids dont realize they laugh at my antics and say stuff like mom and her pills. but what they dont realize is  with 8 kids those pills keep me going all day. but inside i cannot take it .. i am dying slowly. my sister is going through liver failure due to antipsychotic, anti freak out pills taking them off and on all her life. shes only 44. i am 42 and now taking more than her and i am freaking out that i am next. what if my liver cannot take any more? I COMMEND you for even tapering down. when the withdrawls start i start to panic thats when i  become the junkie searching my purse for my pills. it really is disgusting. i am no better than a herion addict.

I tried the C/T from 20 a day - not pretty - seizures, major depression - seriously - jump infront of the bus depression.
I gave in, in less than a week an am now on a slow taper.  Frustrating - I just want the evil pill out of my system - but I want to do this in a way that  I will stay off it, and repair some of the damage I have done to my health.
Check out the recent activity on the right side.  If you see someone has commented on Tramadol and ultram click on it - it will take you to a link where there are a number of us going through the tramadol withdrawal.
Hang in there - keep posting.
