Vistaril

My husbands doctor prescribed him Vistaril & Xanax today. He went there for help for using Oxys etc.  Does anyone know about this, or know if it may help?  We keep getting the run around with our doctors by just prescribing anxiety meds. So has anyone used this for withdrawals and trying to quit those drugs? Please help!

Oxy withdrawal is not only hard physically but also mentally. Note when using Oxys or opiates they deplete your natural dopamine because the Oxys did the job unnaturally. Your natural dopamine takes a while to get back to normal in result you feel depressed & anxious. Vistaril is not as strong as Xnax or other benziods but they can help (better than nothing). I warn against using Xnax because it behaves similar to Oxy because it stimulates the reward receptors in the brain. That is the problem with addiction the reward receptors are very powerful and can easily relapse into old behavior. My warning is this, if you seriously want to be free from Oxy then do not take the Xnax. 9 out 10 will relapse back to Oxy and the big question is will you have a second chance to quit? Or overdose possibly die!

Don't you think your being a bit harsh? Orca came here to get some answers not to be judged. If you took a look at the guidelines you would see it asks you not to judge people. Actually this post is over two years old so it doesn't really matter now I am just saying we are here to help not to criticize.---Rick

HI.....well visteril is widely prescribed for sleep it is in the antihistamines so it is considered non addictive .....you should try this med first of the 2 you have.....xanex is highly addictive and can become a problem of its own quickly try not to take it if you dont have to and if you do take it at all use it very sparingly and only for a few days.....no need to get off one drug and strung out on another.....its beat to try to detox with as little of any med as possible...even with the meds sleep will be difficult hang in there and keep posting....what day of detox are you on???

I love how you act like you dont know the background on Benzos or know anything about them wich is BS. Pillheads are all the same and are on the same pitty trip. If your doin 80s you already know what just about every med out there does and side effects. You act like your in the dark when you know the whole game and how sick it is.
I used to snort 6 80's and 3 30's a day and have lied and cheated just about every living breathing thing i know. Wether your banging, snorting chewing, sucking em like candy you use any excuse to keep it going. You dont have a plan just by what you posted. It took me a year to get off the crap after going through straight hell. Heres whats gonna help you quit. Your gonna go through hell for months with no sleep and horrible moods. You can take all the benzos booze hydros you want but in the end its just another COP OUT for reality. Get your fix and cut it down go to 3/4 instead off a full in the morning and 3/4 later on in the day. Gradually bring yourselves down.. The worst part last three days best thing to do along with that is sleep it off sleep as much as possible. If you dont have anything for sleep Ambien is about the only thing that works. A doctor isnt gonna give you anything that works because you are a drugee and they dont wanna risk their rep by giving you Methadone witch is just as bad as the O C. You know your gonna go through hell and have to deal with it or you might as well keep ruining your life using. Every med that doc doc will give you I know and you know as well you will abuse.
Best advice DEAL WITH IT DEAL WITH REALITY or kiss your life and finances goodbye. Maybe I sound rude but its sickening to read about people like everyones sposed to feel sorry for you .The fact of the matter is you already know what needs to be done so why even ask? Why pretend like you actually want help? Whats the point?? Migraines have got to be the most BS excuse I have ever heard. The only reason people tell that to doctors is because a doctor cant really test for it and you have a better chance of getting your opiates you know it and I know it!
Why beat around the bush? Ive been there Ive watched people die from it. Pillheads give up everything and anything for O.C. If your lucky your getting em for 50 a pop and are still working full time for nothing. The guy that sells your the garbage needs to be locked up and everyone on them that sells them it's already to late. Pull your head out and realize your throwing your life away and anyone elses that comes into contact with you. Sad but true take back control before it's too late. Good luck!

Do not quit xanax cold turkey and make sure its okay to quit the others cold turkey, i quit xanax cold turkey and had withdrawal seizures for 11 months.  And now if i do them by snorting them, i have seizures and black out.  So thats why i quit.  But they just put me on atarax but i havent taken it yet.  So i cant tell you anything about that you just have to be  careful with what u quit cold turkey.  Or get something to level you out so you dont start having complications.

doesnt appear whether u r worried about these 2 drugs u mentioned...and most know xanax is the culprit of the 2...it doesnt sound like u 2 really have a plan to actually stop the oxies..making a stab at it but not a true effore as u have not cut off supply//this appears obvious...one of u will bring the other down if sumpin doesnt give..if he wants this/cleandom/more than u do..then u will have to love him enuf to do this with him...not a prime situation to quit in//not even smoking cessation works often when one continues to smoke while the other is trying to quit

u 2 need to seek aftercare...pinpoint the reasons u r using...nrg in the am sounds like a culprit..if u need to pm me i may be able to help as i also worked..but i did take 4 days of//picked a quit day/and stuck to it..using a bit here and there and sharing a bit here and there is getting u 2 nowhere except back into a deep dark hole..and that hole only gets deeper..and deeper..this addiction crud dont get anybetter unless u STOP it..it is a mental decsion and doesnt sounds as it u 2 r there yet

have u looked into meetings?  clonidine afoten helps with the seel..there r things to help with nrg as well..read the health pages..MOVE..and keep posting

the vistreal  is a anti histamine that hits the histamine receptors..it can help with the calming effect..not addictive...however the xanax is a benzodiapine very  addictive..im on them as well.tried to tapper myself  WRONG MOVE...xanax can help ,the anxiety's  but no more than 1mg aday  or no more than  8 weeks,,,if used just to help withdralws  then use what yo need then flush them..you get hooked on benzos plan on taking them everyday..thats a rough road to travel.....barbiturates  being the top hardest  to withdrawal's  then  xanax then methadone...i thank that valium helps much better in the opiate withdralws due to they are a muscle relaxer as well...depending  on the strength  of vistreails ..they can help to indusse  sleep but to be honest  thats a long shot..till your past day 7  mabey then??????????  the xanax  if your not use to it  will take the edge  off..and makes the days go just a bit smother..but please you dont want any part of xanax  being hooked on them.....they never told me in 1993  when they put me on 4 mgs of klonopin   that this would cause addicshion from a shrink for panic...was on them 11  yrs..5 yrs on xanax low dose...i wouldnt want to take any xanax till you got te oxys  in full blown withdraws...then maybe 2 mgs aday in divided doses..if not use to benzos  then they will relly help the edge..but 10mg valium i than are the best to relax you..they also  carry a longer 1/2 life of 72 hrs +  xanax   11.2 hrs.......good luck

I can relate entirely to making a stop before work in the morning. For me, that was just before the end. The pills start using you.....you no longer use them. Classic answers for you - -  You have a few options. You may quit cold turkey and get it done. You may try and taper the dose down to manageable and then jump off. Or you may opt for a replacement opiate like methadone or sub.  My only recommendation here is the cold turkey. Most of us are terrible at tapering and I personally dont like replacements.  Many succesful people quit their Doc on a Thursday.... then work Friday since day 1 isnt usually too bad. They then have a weekend or long weekend to get over things. Several thing that you can do to make it easier on you....the vistaril is one - insomnia is a given. The zanax will help anxiety...thats also a given.  There are things in the Thomas Recipe and Amino Acid Protocols that are OTC.   Since the hubby has already consulted a Doc - Why dont both of you see the Doc and make a joint effort out of it?   Keep posting and ask any questions that you have...........  that clean life is out there.........

YES.. We are both trying to quit. And during the week is the hardest for us both b/c we both work. So I call someone in the morning to get something before I come into work so I can just make it through the day. By lunch time my husband is calling me for something and then we share that, but he never knows that I get stuff during th day while at work.  I know he wants a better life more then I do, but I do want it also.  I'm glad we do have each other to lean on and to go through this together, I believe it will help.  But Yes, I do want a clean life also!!

So what are your intentions?  Probably dont have to tell you that its really hard for two people partying in the same household to quit.  Glad that you dont like the zanax at least. Bottom line is that the oxy and ilk will turn on you at some time.....you start taking them just to be "normal" and not be sick ..... the high is gone and so is the fun. Only the habit is left. The good news is that this could be history within a week or so if you wished for it to be......

well, we both have problems with meds.  We do Oxy's or Roxi's all week long.. I do more then he does by hiding more of my secret at work. Sometimes i do 2-80's a day or even more.  Also if i don't have any of those, I will find and take Hydrocodone or Percocet.  The xanax is no big deal, we don't even like them. They actually give me headaches which is where all this started, Me having so much pain with migraines.  But the last doctor prescribed some b.s. depression meds a few weeks ago. We can't continue to live like this, but this new doctor only prescribed those two things! Booo! I hope this gives more information. Just ask if more info is needed!

Vistaril is similar to benadryl.....its an antihistamine that also produces a sedative affect.  Good thing to have around for sleep.  The zanax may be problematic. They cant really cut through major oxy withdrawals anxiety.  What other anxiety meds was he prescribed and what was his oxy background?   People may be more helpful if they have more information.
