When do withdrawal symptoms start?

I've been on hydrocodone/vicodin off and on for the past ten years. Most recently three years straight taking four to eight 7.5/325mg a day. I quit cold turkey about two and a half days ago bracing myself for the withdrawal symptoms! I had insomnia the past two nights but still slept about four hours each night. I had diarrhea yesterday morning. Yesterday I had a good feeling all day, very excited about finally quitting. Today I am a little lethargic and feel like I want to sleep all day but am trying to stay up so that I will sleep tonight. I've had no pain, just weakness in my legs and I've been trying to take walks to get my energy up. My question is; do the symptoms always happen within the first five to seven days? Has anyone experienced worse symptoms later?

Check my post I just put up, shaggy1313. All the symptoms I typed up started happening yesterday, thurs evening. My last 10/325 pill was mon morn. I've never experienced anything like this before and hope u are one of the few that skate through this with minimal effects. I abused meth and cocain about 20 years ago and will never forget the week a stopped C/D. I got tired, slept alot and slightly bitchy but that's it. What I'm experiencing now is horrible. I'm 40 with 3 kids and I can't hide far enough away to escape. The symptoms literally came on instant. One min I'm watching sport center the next I want to cry, hide be by myself and leave this world for a while. It's a crazy drug but this is synthetic Herion, remember that. I did some research and Herion is just under nicotine as most addictive chemical. Crazy sht what our drs prescribe to us.

So proud of you that was a huge step in your recovery, throwing away your pills, congrats!!!!!!
Next step call the pharmacy and tell them you don't need the refill,
Then move on to the doctor. You got this.
Immodium, brat diet, bananas, rice, apples, toast that helps bind up.
One day at a time, keep moving forward, it is getting better by faith.
Sleep will return, time will be your healer.
Sending encouragment, comfort, prayers and healing,
Debbie

Depending on the amount and duration of your use your wdrawscan and will vary. Immodium is a requirement, most definately.as for insomnia just plain expect it......lasts longer for others than it might for you. Try not to get to drove up over it.........it does get better.........k

I took tylenol Pm and melatonin and I didn't sleep at all last night!  That's the worst part! My back still hurts and the diarrhea is back! I'm cold all the time! And the achiness is horrible. I plan to take a walk in a little while when the diarrhea lets me leave the house and maybe another later. Today is the worst day yet and I stopped five days ago! I guess there is such a thing as late onset of symptoms. Day five and it seems to be getting worse, not better. I put the rest of my pills in the disposal last night! OMG I can't believe I did that.  Thanks for the advice. I have to find the courage to call my doctor in the morning to stop the script!

Before I had any success with getting clean I had to do what they call, getting rid of the sources. I had to have my scripts stopped. That amounted to me seeing the doctor for that. Maybe a phone call for you. I also had to get all of them out of the house. Keeping them around for "just in case," will mean taking them. I had 240 oxycodone 15mg that we gave to my relatives in another city that are Pain Patients and use this med.
I was worried, "OMG, what happens if I REALLY into pain with my very messed up back???"
Well I have. Advil, heating pads, hot baths, you name it works just fine. I was concerned for absolutely nothing.
And without the opiates, my pain receptors and transmitters, and whatever are settling down anyway.
I am 60 going on 30 and feel closer every day!!!

Thanks! I've been told not to get the script filled and to get rid of what I have, but I'm still scared. I know I need to do that. I plan to, but I keep putting it off.  I slept about two hours last night and I don't feel like doing anything now. I have lower back pain, but not anything like others have posted and not what I expected. I just hope it doesn't get any worse. I don't feel like eating anything but I don't have nausea. My body is very achy, but not so achy that I can't do some things. I feel worse than I did yesterday, and have a headache, but again, not as bad as I expected. I don't know if the headache is because I took so much meds to try ro sleep last night.  I keep reading the posts to try to find out if others have had late onset of symptoms and how long the insomnia will last.

This is so helpful! I've never used a community site before, just read the posts. This is very helpful!

If you want to stop for good and start your recovery it would be a good idea to get rid of your Vic's. tell your doctor not to prescribe anymore. Your tolerance and dependency are going to increase and you are going to have to take more.

Hun nothing really helps with the sleep in the beginning, Benadryl makes some people more anxious.
The melatonin, sleepy time tea, valerian root, alteril and sleep by nature made are two over the counter natural sleep aids.
A hot bath or shower before you lay down.
How are you doing this morning?

Yes, I'm craving them like nothing else!  I still have some left and still have a prescription, but I've heard that the withdrawal lasts longer if you taper. I don't know if that's true but I thought I'd try cold turkey first. The insomnia is a lot worse tonight. I went to sleep at nine and was up by eleven. I took Advil pm and Benadryl an 8:30 and the when I woke up at eleven I took melatonin, which did nothing. Does anything help with the insomnia?

congrats on making the decision to stop using.
that's good you found other meds that work better.
do you still have vicodin left? are you craving them?
yes many people have vision problems when they are detoxing.
give it some time to clear up.

Thank you all so much for your help and support! Yes, I started them for pain...fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. I have since found other medication that works well for the pain without narcotics but I kept taking the vicodin anyway because of the high. I'm also having trouble with my vision is that a normal symptom?

you have been on a relatively low dose so what you are experiencing in regards to withdrawal symptoms could be it.
you will probably have waves up and down for a few weeks with some good days and some bad.
walking is a good thing, keep that up.
stay hydrated, if you are achy take an Epsom salts bath.
sleeping at 2 1/2 days is very unusual.
consider yourself one of the lucky ones.

did you start to take them because of pain issues?

I think Physically you are going down hill now..Just be aware of the metal that can come in & out like thunder with a big Boom..This all is just part of the process as the Brain takes time to balance back after the removal of these Stims. Keep doing what you are doing because you are doing a good Job. Make sure you drink Lots of water, protein drinks and electrolyte drinks. Get some real good natural vit/min so you can replenish back what the drugs take away. I wish U the Best.

Congrats to you on quitting!! Sounds like you have a good frame of mind so that will help u alot! I used the flu shield as well. Sleep and being grouchy were the worst parts for me... The time frame is different for everyone but the worst of it is usually over between days 4-6 for most of the people I've seen post!! You are really doing great! Keep on keeping on!! One choice at a time...

It seems physical symptoms vary alot from person to person. Since you may be one of the lucky few not to get hit so hard in the first week, be especially watchful for the mental part. You know, the little demon in your head that will whisper, "See, this is easy, so you can have just one pill now."
I have one of those demons that whispers to me from time to time. I really have to have my guard up all the time, and be working on the sobriety I now cherish. I am about 60 days clean from oxycodone.
Do keep coming back to the forum, it has been a lifesaver for me.

Another heads up, people who haven't been through it don't understand. I'm still ducking my family and lying by acting like I have flu. Luckily my child just got over the flu do it makes sense that I contracted. I will say expressing my exact thoughts here makes me feel better. I have a sht wife that will persecute me instead of help so my situation is rough. As I said before, I really wish u no withdrawal and u too be alllllll good. This absolutely *****
