alcohol withdrawl

I am 32 m 5'11 165 lbs. I have been a moderate to heavy drinker for about 10 years. With in the last year my drinking has steadly increased to the point that I felt it was time to slow down or quite. I am 24 hours into going cold turkey, and I am experiancing withdrawl symptoms, Shaking hands, hot flashes, cold sweats, mild nausea, and also 1 I havent read about. I seem to be producing exsesive saliva and am swallowing a lot. Is that normal? Also much of what I read here on line sounds a bit extreme and scary! Aside from being tired right now I am feeling better, and the shaking has lessend a lot. Am I near being out of the woods? Or is this just a bit of getting better before things get worse?

Hey,

I was a Jack-o-holic, if you know what I mean? I used to get "caught up in the race" so to speak, when I drank my Jack Daniels. I would drink for 3 days strait when I was in Korea, believe it or not. Anyhow, ever since my addiction to oxycontin, I have disposed of alcohol completely. I am afraid I will die with both. Because I take 160 mgs of oxycontin a day and If I drink my Jack, which I miss greatly!, I will get sick as a rabid dog, I am sure. I miss it alot, but I now you can stop. Although, you have no substitute, like I had my pain pills, you can create a hobby, or exercise, maybe build a model or do ceramics....it may sound gay, but sometimes it fills the void and will help you get out of it!! Good Luck!!

Yes, I thought the cravings were worse then the w/d symptoms. When I had quit, I was always trying to reason with myself to have a drink, even trying to justify "near beer". I was taught to stay away from anything close.
Go to gobs of AA meetings, like they say 90 meetings in 90 days. You will hear your story told and you can relate. Like any of it, it just takes time.
Watch yourself so you dont transfer your obsession to another drug or source like I have now.

I can see where excess saliva would be produced as Alcohol causes dehydration.. I quit drinking a year ago.. For a couple day's I was a little shaky but nothing to extreme I found the mental battle much more difficult as I would reach for a drink when I was Happy sad or just bored.. Everyday sometimes every hr. or even min I will not drink I can deal without a drink.. This lasted for a couple of months then the craving began to fade. I now do not crave alcohol, actually the smell makes me nauseated and I feel 100 percent better :)) I wish you well on your journey and remember do not reach for the drink in those weak moments.. How much alcohol were you drinking?  I know a couple of people including myself that have quit from a 12 pk of beer a night without serious issues; however, alcohol can be dangerous to withdrawal from.  Give more info and please keep posting.
