Hi

It depends on the symptoms, sorry to be vague but there are the acute symptoms and then there are the post acute symptoms.  For me the acute symptoms lasted a month to 5 weeks but the diarrhoea lasted from middle of August to first week in December 2014.

When the acute symptoms subsided I was left with a terrible fatigue, I could not walk more than a few yards.  Some people will advise taking supplements but don't waste your money, all that works is exercise, gently at first then increasing as you feel better.  It took me a month to six weeks to get over the fatigue.

It's now 6 months since I started withdrawal but I still have problems sleeping.  I can fall asleep but I wake up after an hour then I'm awake for two hours, then i fall asleep again and the process is repeated, I also have suffered some memory loss, the doctor says this is because of the length of time I was taking codeine.

If you feel that you still have the anxiety and agitation try taking Lanes Quiet Life tablets, they are Herbal and they work.  You can take 3 at night to help you sleep and they are non addictive.  You can buy them in UK and EU don't know about US.

For the record I was on codeine for 34 years taking Codeine and high strength Di-hydro codeine, I had to stop taking them as I had an op and they caused a reaction.  It was the worst time of my life.  The best advice I was given is by my Doctor, I said I would take the withdrawal one day at a time, she said I wouldn't do it I had to take it an hour at a time,  Occupy your time by the hour, exercise then listen to music then a walk, anything that gets you through the hour.

perhaps it depends upon the damage done by the drug.

I'm not quite sure what the question is... Are you asking if the withdrawal symptoms will get better, because yes, they do slowly get better physically. The mental part of the addiction is the hard part. If you are asking if someone stops taking codeine will their injuries, or whatever the reason someone is taking the drug for will get better, that all depends on the injury and pain level. If the pain is true physical pain then it will probably be something that has to be managed by a doctor. If it is physical and emotional, than it can help to get off the meds is some circumstances. There is the fine line between true pain management and addiction...
