Generally they say a year after it has been filled for safety reasons.  The Gov't can't advocate taking outdated meds.  Some meds become more or less concentrated the older they are.  How old is the medication?  Of course this can vary a lot because it also depends on when the medication was actually manufactured which you would not know you would only know when it was filled.  There are so many variables here.  I have never heard of outdated pain meds hurting anyone but they may not be as effective.  At the same time I personally would never tell anyone to take outdated meds either.  Do you have a more specific example you want advice on?
