Hey perry88! Congrats man! Im an ex IV drug user..now on methadone for 11 yrs. Suboxone is used for the same thing but like another poster had said, its becoming a street drug now and just as abused as many other opiates even tho its an opiate agonist. I would tell you to try melatonin melts (get them in any health food or pharmacy) they are great for natural sleep aid and Ive not heard of side effects if any. If I had seen your post sooner I would have suggested the blood pressure medicine Clonidine (name brand Catapres) for the heart racing and sleeplessness. If you know anyone goin thru WD this drug can be a real life saver. Ive also used Loperamide in larger doses as well for multiple purposes during WD too. There are lots of things that help but nothing really makes you feel better than good old time. Ive heard ppl say that on methadone WD they are still feeling like garbage even after a YEAR! That scares me green! I know due to other issues I will probably be on this til I die but I have done cold turkey WD off other things and do know some tricks here and there. Hope you continue to do well ..we are all cheering for you!!!

That's great, I'm glad you feel better. One of the sayings in recovery is, "Take what works and leave the rest." also, "when something doesn't work, do something else." That goes for sleep as well. If I tried to sleep, but it didn't work, I'd get up and stretch, walk, write, then I'd try again. When I didn't sleep for 21 days, I remember resting my mind. Meditation helped rest my mind enough to function on no sleep. So, try to let your mind rest, we heal mostly in our resting time, even if we don't actually fall asleep. Keep on going, it just gets better and better, sometimes fast, sometimes slow, but progress always materializes for those who work for it.

Hi & welcome,

Benadryl isn't really a sleep aid so much as it's an antihistamine. If it didn't help last night, odds are that it won't tonight either. I tried to take it early on for sleep as well as some other suggested medications and came to the conclusion that it was interfering w/ my brain and body's healing. It left me feeling even worse, too. Not sleeping is the toughest part of the whole thing but hang in there -- it'll come! The best thing you can do right now is to try to redirect your mind when you can't fall asleep. There's no point in struggling with it as it'll only make it worse. Hot baths w/ table or Epsom salts really help relax you & soothe your muscles. Exercise (even walking around the block or your yard) will help to oxygenate your body & kick-start those endorphins, full spectrum amino acids, all the b vitamins, N-acetyl Cysteine and maybe a Cal/Mag powdered supplement are also good aids. The other thing to remember is to stay hydrated to flush that stuff from your tissues and help your body start to repair itself.

The more time you get under your belt, the more these things will help. Your body is in a sort of acute fight or flight mode right now and your neurotransmitters and digestion need time to heal and balance out. What you're going through is completely 'normal'. (Ha! How's that for consolation?) Don't worry -- there's light @ the end of the tunnel. You'll be through your acute withdrawal in a matter of a week or two.

Hold Fast & Stay with us. You're doing great!

It takes 21 days for your last dose to leave your body, usually that is a turning point for sleep and restlessness. Then you have to wait for your natural brain chemistry to start producing again, that is different for everyone. It is a long ride, but it is so worth it. If you continue, it will only get worse.

Amino acid shakes
Omega fatty acids
Cal/mag/zinc
electrolytes, like EmergenC or Lemon/lime water
drink lots of water
keep moving, go for walks or anything

Those are the things needed to get your natural balance back, but know that you will return, you just have to ride through this part.

Yep, that's sub withdrawal for you. Can you believe that doctors believed there was no withdrawal for years, they thought it was all in people's heads. Well, it is in your head, especially after consistently taking the second strongest opioid known to man. Your brain receptors have shrunk and recessed, your body can't make as many chemicals to relax, sleep, and kill pain as sub was providing. It will take some time for your brain to kick start again. Just remember this, sub is the fastest growing illicit drug in the world, it is very addictive and is more and more available on the street. Honestly, you just need to stay away from it. If that was a "friend" that hooked you up with this path, then it doesn't sound like you need any enemies. It will take some time, but you will heal. So, do you think you are an addict?

How long were you taking the sub?  An 1/8 of what mg pill?  It sounds like you were taking subs consistently, daily?  If so, you absolutely would likely experience w/ds.  You weren't taking any opiates before the sub?

Unfortunately, sub w/d can be a bit worse than the w/d of other opiates.  There's nothing you can do except give it time.

I'd also strongly recommend talking to a professional about why you were abusing subs.
