is this a relapse???

I am relatively new to this site and I love it!!!

I have been clean for almost 3 yrs. I just had surgery and have been taking Vicodin for the pain. This is definitely not my DOC (drug of choice) , but I feel good....

Is this considered a relapse???

For the last 3 years I've denied any kind of opiates or benzos from my doctors, but i was in a car crash. no broken bones, but 3 dislocated discs in my back and one in my neck. sooo yes I'm in pain.
Do I have to say that my three years clean are gone? that's what's so upsetting to me. I am who I am, You are right at that, thus my name "alwaysanaddict", because even though before this car accident, I haven't picked up even once, I have played my addiction out in every other way possible....almost.
(binge eating, very indecisive, shopping and spending too much money, have to have all of them, not just one, gambeling) so I am  no angel, but I know I do not want to live the life I had 3 years ago!

so are my 3 years gone because I am on this stupid vics right now!!! :-(

When the doctors offered you narcotics did we all say that I can not take opiates as I am in recovery? Because there is a lot of non narcotic medications out there. Some people are allergic to opiates what do you think they do in a situation like that. The answer is easy they prescribe a non narcotic pain medication. There has to be at least 5. One being toradol, When we are honest with medical professionals it is really a rewarding experience. Unless of coarse you have suffered some real traumatic episode like a car crash were you have possibly broken bones and other more serious conditions that absolutely require the need for opiates to be used you can tell how bad the pain is and if you can tolerate it. Situations like this insist on a morphine pump that will deliver a preset dose, Possibly preventing a full blown relapse! Never be ashamed of who you are -----NOAH

thank you for your comments and advice.

My drug of choice was cocaine, but basically anything that was an upper. And I was a pill popper when I couldn't get ahold of the coke. I also loved acid and ecstacy. but what really brought me to MY rock bottom was the cocaine. (I even would smoke it too)

the vics are 7.5mg and it says vicodin ES whatever that is. And yes I have to admit I have taken more than prescribed at times. I'm nervous, but I am in pain. Sometimes i just want that "good feeling" too, rather than just the pain go away.

No it is not, but I agree with Carrie76 about feeling too good on them. I am a recovering Vicodin addict who used to pop 15 pills a day. I now have some liver damage as a result, and I am not proud of it. This is a great drug for pain, and very useful, but it can be addicting, no doubt about it. Only take it if you really need it. Typical presciptions for Vicodin on the bottle label will read "take one pill every 4-6 hours as needed for pain." I have memorized that one by heart (= If you have never taken Vicoden before, one pill will offer you adequate pain relief in most cases for this amount of time. You can take up to two at a time, but don't do this unless your doctor has told you to.

Surgery of any kind will more than likely require some kind of narcotic pain medicine. If people take them correctly, as prescribed, there usually is no problem, but for drug addicts like us the word "responsible" is what we threw out of our vocabulary first, and this is why we are here to talk to each other. It's o.k. to "feel good" on the medicine b/c God knows you don't want to be hurting after surgery, but "feel good" can mean several different things when your mind is speaking to you. Your brain my say "yes I feel better b/c the pain that was bothering me an hour ago is now gone so this is a good medicine to take for my pain or it can mean "Damn I feel high! This is good stuff. If I feel this good on one, lord knows how good I would feel if I were to take another. These pills make me chill and relax, too cool." It's obvious here which train of thought is appropriate. Which do you have right now, and that should indicate whether or not there is a potential for relapse. BTW what was your main drug of choice???  Vicodin are useful for controlling pain, but should only be used as necessary. Just be careful when taking this medicine. Keep us informed. Take care!

I have a tooth that's acting up.  I'm only 37(?) days clean and I've been taking advil which seems to do the trick on it.  I know I need to go to the dentist for it and I know what he's going to want to prescribe.  But as I sit here right now typing this, I'm not going to take the script.  I'll manage somehow.  No way do I want to go back to those things.

Wish I had the will power of my stepson.  He was given vike for an abcessed tooth (as well as an antibiotic)..he took 2 of the vics, hung on to the bottle for  a day or 2 in case it flared up..it didn't...the balance of 10 went down the toilet.  He's seen his mother and I have gone through.

Recently I tore a disc in my back while playing golf I did not except pain meds when I left but when I got there my pain was so horrific the doctor told me that the stress from the pain was making my blood pressure spike way to high and told me he wanted to give me one pain shot just to bring my blood pressure down so I agreed....
I was given 2mgs of Dilaudid through an IV with a small bag of roboxine.......
As soon as it hit my blood stream well let me put it this way it was better than sex........
I had to go to a meeting everyday for a week that is how bad that one shot effected me......Thank god I have the support in my life through N/A and my family to fight my addiction how ever it trys to attack me.......
But I do no this for a fact if I have a bottle of percs there is no way I could control myself to not sucking down the whole bottle........I had two teeth pulled a yr ago and my doctor gave me a script for tylenol 4s....my mother went to pick them up for me and dispense them to me I only took them for one day and a half for a total of three pills....and my mother flushed the rest down the toilet......

defianately not a relapse if it was prescribed for after surgery pain, but if you take them when there is no more pain then it is.

congrats on 3 years.

I wouldnt say you had relasped really, ...if your taking them solely by the prescribed amount only. But if you like the way they make you feel then that is definetly a sign to beware of. I would definetly quite taking them as soon as you were able or felt like you could manage without them and just take motrin or aleve. Its very easy to fall back into it and from the way it sounds you havent but you very well could especially if you like the feeling. Hope this helps some!!:)
