No I didn't over react. The poor girl came for help and/or advice. I am quite aware of the effects of SA and pregnancy. And it's something I don't condone. I've run about a billion still born reports in the State of AZ and saw it all the time. It's tragic. But when someone seeks advice, I don't think it's appropriate to scold or judge. Just advise and help. Here's the comment that I found to be critical, "If this was a one time party flook (which I doubt)...." The which I doubt statement is condenscending. People shouldn't be afraid to ask a question. She seemed concerned and that's why she was questioning. She said, if she knew she was pregnant, she never would have used. These are the words of someone who is scared and concerned...in my my humble opinion.
I know priests, doctors, nurses and other professionals wouldn't accuse her of being a frequent user/abuser. I hope this poster gets some good advice from her physician and has a health happy baby.
For the love of God. PLEASE NOBODY JUMP ALL OVER THIS LADY AND GIVE HER THE LECTURE! She's obviously concerned and is asking for advice....not judgment. You don't know her situation. Respectfully speaking.
I think if you used it over 30 days ago, it's out of your system!
Wow...kind of overreacted, didn't you? I don't think anyone *did lecture her, do you? She is seeking help, and that's a *good thing.

Okay let's get to the heart of the issue YOU and YOUR drug use..Do you have a problem with drugs?? Are you willing to get help?/ If your smoking crack ,what kind of people are you around?/ Are you never going to touch drugs again?/ These questions need to be answered,If some of these are no to these questions I am going to question you having a kid/ Drugs are no way of life for any human born ,un born, planned unplanned, They are evil and devastation.
I'm not sure if this post got moved here from the pregnancy forum or not. That being said,Angie you will find all the help and support you need here for BOTH you and your baby.We don't lecture people here,we're addicts,we're not here to judge, only to be honest and help and support anyone seeking recovery.
Gizzy,great post,very informative.
Yes you will get support here and my comment was not for you as you can see, but this can be a serious issue. I hope it was a one time thing, but rarely does that happen. Good luck

Avis
Do you not think this would be an issue to warn her to be careful with crack
The following are characteristics of cocaine exposed infants:
Prematurity
Lowerbirthweight, shorter
Smaller head circumference
A piercing cry, which is apparently indicative of neurological dysfunction
Lower Apgar score
Irritability and hypersensitivity. The newborn shoots from sleep to screaming and is inconsolable.
Poorfeeding
High respiratory and heart rates
Tremulousness
Startling responses
Poor sleep patterns
Significantly lower scores on two of the dimensions measured by the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scales (BNBAS): 1) scales related to interactive abilities, and 2) scales related to organizational responses to environmental stimuli. Infants who perform poorly on the BNBAS are considered high risk, especially if performance is poor in more than one of the behavioral dimensions.
Inability to respond to caregiver. These cocaine exposed infants are largely unable to respond to the human voice and face and are unable to interact with others.
An increased risk of malformations of the genito-urinary tract. Dr. Chasnoff recommends that these infants should have routine ultra-sound evaluations of their kidneys in order to rule out such defects.
There is evidence that the use of cocaine shortly before birth can be associated with cerebral infarction (stroke) which damages the brain of the newborn. A CT scan of the brain may be indicated when both the infant and mother test highly positive for cocaine at the time of birth and when there are additional indications to suggest a stroke might have occurred.
A greater incidence of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). In Dr. Chasnoff's sample, 15% of the infants died of SIDS, more than triple that of heroin or methadone exposed infants.
Sleep pattern abnormalities associated with apnea and deep sleep, which may be associated with the greater incidence of SIDS
Visual abnormalities which may be associated with retinopathy or damage to the iris. This is thought to be related either to actual damage caused by the cocaine and/or the premature birth associated with such use.
I don't think they jumped on her and you think it's not an issue that she smoked crack while pregnant, hmmmmmm. Maybe she only did it the once, and chances are the baby will be totally fine, but do you know what smoking crack does to a fetus???????????????????????????????????????? Great advice, are you an addict?
Angie....depending on how far along you are, it's probably not an issue....tell your physician and or the nurse and see what they think. Especially if it was on that one occassion.
Generally it takes about three days for it to leave YOUR body, and about 3-5 to leave the baby's. However, if for whatever reason the doctors at the hospital suspect something, a hair follicle test will go back to the life of that hair.
It sounds like you know you made a mistake, and are willing to stop drug use while you're pregnant. That's a good thing. But if you're an addict, it may be more difficult than you realize. Please get some help and begin to build a support system. N.A. is wonderful, and there are meetings virtually everywhere. Talk to your doctor about this, too, just to make sure everything is fine. I'm sure it is. A single use during pregnancy is unlikely to cause any damage.
Good luck.
Oh my is right....please get help and spare your unborn child the effects of the drugs...Please.
Oh my....YOU may not find much support on this forum by what you just posted, but your unborn child will. I have no clue how long crack cocaine stays in your body. Are you a habitual user? If so, probably much longer than one would hope. Without knowing your age or history, and to spare you a lengthy lecture on the evil of drugs (pregnant or not), I will say this. If you are a drug user and intend to continue with this pregnancy, seek help now! Your baby will suffer dire consequences. If this was a one time party flook (which I doubt), call and schedule an appt with an OB and start taking prenatal vitamins. Make sure you tell your doctor what you have told us. Either way, seek the care of a professional doctor, sooner than later.
I am not a medical doctor. Google "cocaine and half-life". From what I read the length of time required for cocaine to leave the body depends on the dose (amount) taken, and the route of ingestion (inhalation, injection, etc), and of course on how "pure" the cocaine was. That is street cocaine can have alot of other contaminants added to it - which may cause more? problems. And whether alcohol was consumed at the same time. Both cocaine and alcohol are metabolized (broken down) by the liver - the end products (metabolites) are what can cause problems.
The half life for cocaine, which means the length of time for the cocaine to leave the body is less than 30 min to 6 hours.
l guess it would be gone but of course this depends on how many weeks pregnant you are in terms of whether any "damage" was done".
And cocaine is not "crack cocaine".
I am sure there are doctors, pharmasists and councilors to ask this question too.
The important thing is to start eating nutritiously, excercising and take multi- vitamins and stop all drugs and alcohol. The drugs could cause permanent damage and or your baby gets taken away by social services.
Wishing you and your baby the best
