methadone constipation
I've been on methadone for about 2 1/2 years now and I've somehow dealt with the consitpation. I have found ways of dealing with the constipation, usually involving enemas and senna laxatives. I've even gone to the dr for my problem and they told me to try miralax, which didn't work, and then senna. My problem isn't so much the hardness, my stool is hard, but the problem is that I never have the urge to go. I go once a week if I'm lucky and that's only because I make myself go, by taking laxatives and using an enema, once I start feeling backed up. The laxatives help move my stool down and I do get bad cramps, then I have to use the enema to get it to come out because the stool is too hard to push out. This system has been working, but last week I went and the next day I began feeling bloated in a weird different way. It only got worse with each passing day and is accompanied by random nausea. I thought maybe I was still backed up, even though the bloated feeling is slightly higher up...not in my abdominal area but my stomach area, I tried taking laxatives to move the stool down but nothing happened. I waited a few days and tried again and still nothing. The weird thing is that I don't really feel like I am backed up and it's been a week since I last went. I'm beginning to get scared, I absolutely hate feeling bloated like this. I'm currently detoxing my way off methadone and I was hoping that my constipation would get better, but so far I've been more gassy. I don't know what to try if doses of laxatives aren't working. please help. I feel like nothing can help because of the methadone, I don't even know what this feeling is.
I'm so damn happy I'm not alone I've been on opiates since 16 am now 29 been clean over a year and on methadone for a year. I'm down to 8mg and was at 210 6 months ago. My clinic doesn't know anything about this and they keep saying its something else... Soooooo stool softeners make it worse. Dulcolax works till I stop taking it. Currently I'm at rabbit turds. I seem to remember 4 years ago on dope or percs I would go off them and have crazy diarrhea all the time. To be honest I pray for those withdraw symptoms just so I can go lol. Pleaseeeeee suggest the best laxative or what to do. Thanks
when I had that problem from methadone..kind of like yours. Mine would be pain all the way out to wear you hold onto the seat like your giving birth. when it fall in the water it was so heavy water splash all over me..sick but I looked at it, it looked like a crater, had edges on it..I went to the ER 1 time didn't go for 9 days, they took 2 x-rays showed me.i was clogged all the way into my colon.. they put me on mirlax too..I used a cap full twice a day .they said 1 cap at the 17gm mark..I did it my way.it 3 days I unladed 3 toilets full. But I kept using that worked good. Once you miss a day its over. The saline enemas are not that good when its a hard mass..get this I knew a girl that was on this med also. the ER had to dig it out with her awake. When you poop boulders and one gets stuck your cheeks only go so far, then bleeding..i had a lady friend she dug hers out all the time..im sorry this had to be or sound so sick..im on perks on a taper from 15mgs im at 10mgs in 5 days dropping to 7.5 and im still having problems but nothing like methadone does..
Hi. I been on meth for 4 years now and I was so clogged up I been getting frequent urination. But when I take the laxatives for some reason after the 3rd day the methadone doesn't last that long. I may need to get s colonoscopy done but I'm scared cause if I clear my system out I'll be in full blown withdrawals. This is so weird. Does anyone know what's causing this to happen?

Danny718, I have been going through the same thing, I've been going into withdrawal way early and it started about 2 to 3 days after I took a new over the counter laxative, I wish someone could tell me which kind definitely won't make me withdrawal.

I HAVE BEEN TAKING METHADONE, AND HEROIN FOR 30 YRS. BOTH ARE AS EQUALLY CONSTIPATING. I LIVE ON LAXATIVES. TWICE A WEEK I GO,ONLY BECAUSE OF THE USE OF LAXATIVES. BY THE 3RD DAY IM BLOATED, LOSS OF APPETITE, AND VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. DONT FORGET LAXATIVES ARE ADDICTING TOO . AND OLD STOOL IS TOXIC. JUST SO YOU KNOW , I USE DUCOLAX 3-4 TABS, 2X A DAY . AND 3 SENNA TABS, JUST TO MAKE SURE I GO. ITS RUINED MY LIFE, MORE THAN THE OPIATES I TAKE. ENEMAS DONT WORK AT ALL..MAGESIUM CITRATE WORKS, BUT, GETS ME NAUSEAUS. when you're on a high dose of methadone you don't feel bad you are actually constipated but when you cut it down you start to feel the constipation
I've been on methadone for 6.5 years. On 120mg for the past 2 or 3. The only that helps me go is Phillips milk of magnesia. I take a dosing cup full nightly before bed. Every morning I get up and go. It might be a bit liquidfied but it's the only way I can get anything to come out. I suggest for anyone who is having trouble to try it. Go with the original because the flavored ones leave a horrible taste behind. Hope this helps.
Sorry, I know this is old but I just got here. I'm on methadone 25 years. Bad constipation. With Metimucil, if you don't drink at least 8-10 glasses of water, it will clog you up worse!!. Get Miralax. Take 2 capfuls for 3 days. If needed, on the third day, take 3-5 sennas. The fourth day, use an enema, or old time enema bag and put a 1/2 to whole bag of the water in you. You'll go. Next day take 1 capful. Next day enema again. Hope this helps. This is what I do.

I have been on methadone for a few months now, using it to come off of a serious addiction and working with a doctor to clean me up. I feel great physically and mentally except for the constipation. I was on a variety of street drugs for years and had a terrible issue with constipation then, but was warned if would only get worse when I switched to dones. When I initially went to the doctor to get help I talked to him about my problem and he perscribed me a medication to regulate me. He told me to take it with Metamucil. I have been taking everything regularly, but have only been getting worse - WAY WORSE. I have heard the horror stories about methadone but I do not think the average person user has problems like this, as I think I was worse off than any methadone user when I was using street drugs but now that I have switched to methadone I am even worse. I worry I am going to die like Elvis Presley and explode because of being so bloated at this point. I am taking everything- my meds, physillum, thriphila, senna- the works. I am trying to make this work...I hear that physillum (main ingredient in Metamucil) is a bulk laxative and the word bulk scares me. While it moves things, it is suppose to make things more consistent, which I already have a problem with. Consistency is not a problem- my **** is hard as a rock and the size of a baseball when I finally get anything out. That happens once a month and between that I cry to get rabbit siZe turds out. When the 'big one ' happens it is to the point where I feel like I would rather die than go through with the process of ********, but I get such bad pains because after a month of only pooping at max once a week a very small amount, I need to have a big one sometimes. I was taking senna (smooth move tea) before I went to the doctor and he said that it is just an irritant that upsets my system to make me go and to get better long term you need to regulate. Senna helped when I took it, but I havent since I've been on methadone because my doctor said it is not good for me. But with the meds not working I think anything is better than what is going on now. Supposedly triphla is an herb you can take regularly to help and I hear it is a good method but I am not sure. All I want is to go I once every 2days. I will take them all if I can. I dont want an upset stomach from taking too much laxitives but I want regulation. Can I take a combo? Bulk laxitives sound horrible for my situation...does Anyone know? I feel like a senna/irritant at least gets it out, but I know that is not the best option. And I'm new to triphla so I can not vouch either way.

HI the laxitives wont cause the methadone to come out of your system it is absorbed by your stomach laxitives work in the small and large intestines and methadone is know to cause constipation...mirolax works for most people give it a try if one dose dosent do it try 2 good luck and God bless.....Gnarly
I am worried that if i take laxatives it will take the methadone out of my system and cause me to go into withdrawal. could this happen? and if i were to take methadone if it weren't to cause the methadone to come out of my system how long should i wait to take the laxative after i take the methadone?
you should be proud of yourself for 129 days I really never thought life would be much good without the pills . But how wrong I was. Just not being zoned out all the time makes life better. And each day gets better. There is no way I will ever catch you on sober days unless I out live you by 109 days. May you live a long and sober life. Michael

I used to eat the potatoe chips made with elestra or what ever the fake fat stuff is and it kept me fairly regular. The wierd stuff we do to maintain the drug use
Well How much laxatives do you take? Do you take just one or two of them? And I took a stool softener , So I took like 4 Laatives and that many stool softeners. But I would double check with your doctor and would not start out with that much. I took Methadone for I think if I recall correct 5 years or so. Anyway I went cold Turkey in May 2010 and I am 129 days clean...And I have to say I did not feel like going much at all and at times could not even Pee. But when you go off the methadone you will start to go and give it time to even out. Along with that I would talk to your doctor more about how little you go and oh You don't have to keep taking that much laxatives either, when you get yourself going you back off. You might have to take a stool softener every night but I do think that is fine. Well I hope this helps and good luck on getting off the Methadone...It was the best thing for me, I still have pain but I am me again......Ladyrhea4
