norco addiction

HI My question is this and it may sound bad but here it goes.  I have been taking norco 10/325 for the last 4 years.  I was taking 6 a day then I have gotten it down to 4 for the past 2 years.  Before I started taking this medication which was given to me for chronic back problems and no insurance, I had times of severe depression and anxiety.  I am always racing.  Pre norco I would have days or weeks when I would be so sad that I could not leave my apt.  Since I have been taking Norco I have been able to live my life.  I know that sounds terrible but I am such a worrier that I would stress my self out so bad that I did not want to go to work or out friends etc.  I have tried different kinds of meds prescribed by a psychiatrist for depression, ADHD and Bi polar before I was taking Norco and none seemed to work to change my mood.  I realize that Norco is only masking my lonely feelings but I am also working through a lot of personal issues with my psychologist too (who doesn't know about the norco).  I know Norco is addictive and not designed to help anxiety but I find it really works.  I know I should stop taking it but the quality of my life seems so much happier now.  Any advice on what I should do?  I have my liver tested every year so I know that is ok.  DOes this sound terrible?

yeah, that's part of the addiction.  We'll do just about anything to not face life without our drug.  I've been there.  Haven't done anything illegal that I'm aware of, but if I was at the time I'm sure I would have.  I used ot spend a couple hundred $$'s a week on cocaine, and I like hydros better than coke, so I'm sure if I had known the avenue was there I would have used it.  I've been weaning off and clean for long enough now to see the dangers, but the cravings are still there, so I must use thebest of my willpower.

How right you are . The chance of getting busted for a 60 count is there, maybe remote but its definitely a risk that I am foolishly taking. I guess thats part of the addiction.

I just had to say that when I saw the comment section and saw fishfood, I laughed so hard, my daughter woke up and asked what was so funny.  Dont know why it hit me so hard and I know it was accidental - but too funny, freudean.  LOL   I needed that.

fishy - i always wondered if your name was meant to say you were baiting everyone.  just curious?

and dalmation, poor dalmation - do you scour over every post and find the word internet.  no one will tell u b/c they dont want this life for you - and no one even knows u.  IT IS HELL!!  WOULDNT WISH IT ON AN ENEMY!!  So, maybe you are already addicted - maybe this would send you in that direction - would never help someone continue a self destructive path - even if they don't agree.  I don't believe anyone can.  HOWEVER< i do empathize with you.  I have bee u once and would have done anything for another 40 or so pills - not worth it dude - kick it now, plese ---- u can do it.

Dutchess said it perfectly and I really hope that helps your anxiety about taking these meds.  If it does the trick and your not walking on water to get more pills most of the time, then I truely believe you should continue them.  Those meds are here for a reason so if they help the main problem then there's the reason.

I know what you mean about the internet.  I used to do the same thing and always felt a little off about it.  Maybe if you talk to your doc, he will write it for you.  With the amount you need, it seems a reasonable request.  I think you would have to come clean about it though, for him to really know the situation.

please keep us current on you and how your doing.  This is really a great place to just lurk around and read.  I have learned so much.

Take care.

love, M

Hi!  I'm sorry for sounding dumb but what is Norco made up of?  I have an addiction to Oxycodone.  Is Norco in the same category as Oxycodone?  I know it's an opiate but that's all I know.  Your post said you get Norco off the web, right?  Will you please tell me which website is legitimate to order these meds off of?  I have asked this question a few times but no one will ever give me an answer!  I think Mistake also said she gets meds online.  Also, welcome to the forum!!!  Hopefully we'll talk later!

norco's are 10mg hydrocodone with 325mg acetaminophen (tylenol). Oxycodone is something different, it is used in percocet along with tylenol, oxy is stronger, usually more addictive, and oten much harder to get off of than hydrocodone. Hydrocodone is more potent than codeine, oxycodone is more potent than hydrocodone.

The internet sites I have no idea I have always gotten prescriptions and my husband and I are doctors I would not feel comfortable, but plenty of people on here should know. You might not have gotten a reply before b/c most people in this forum are trying to get off of opiates and many of them going through horrible withdrawals doing everything they can to get through the net 60 seconds without going to the pharmacy. ( I haven't seen you post before so I am not positive but that would be my best guess)

I have tried anti dep, Adhd, anti-anxiety and bipolar medication.  I spent about 5 years trying different medications and going to therapy at least once a week.  None of them helped.  I don't think that I should take norco, I feel that it probally is not the smartest choice for medications.  That was  the reason why I wandered on this site.  I will admit I am afraid to tell my dr because I think that she will say that its bad.  However, I really am soo much happier than I was  before and much more able to do things like work, clean my apt etc.  Any advice that you could give would be great.  I also have a problem that I am a huge people pleaser and I don't like people to think badly of me.  Therefore I dont want to tell my therapist.  I know sounds crazy, I admit that.  Thanks for posting and your advice

your post sounds just like ME!!!!

I suffer from depression also.  Been on many many meds and all seem to do no good.  I have currently been on prozac alternating from 20mg to 30 mg every 2 weeks with xanax on an "as needed" basis.  I haven't taken much of that.  Only when the panic attack hit.  That was not often, until I went c/t 8 days ago.

The lortab gave me the energy and put me in the mood for "living".  I could go and do things without pain or feeling depressed.  However that past year I have noticed that I had too much month left at the end of my pills...lol.  That is when I realized I was abusing them.  My levels needed to be increased to get that "energy" I needed to function.

I am working on getting clean now.  WD's really stink.  Arms are achy and tingling as I write.  Swelling of hands and feet.  My right side, where my liver is, is KILLING me right now.  I DO NOT WANT TO DIE!!!

I HAVE A WONDERFUL HUBBY AND 2 BEAUTIFUL KIDS.  It was My choice to abuse and now I am paying for it.

I will tell my Dr when I go for refills for prozac, and thyroid meds.  That is one thing I MUST do.  He is great and very compassionate.  I think the last time I went to see him, he knew that there was a problem forming.  It was me who assured him that I was "ok".  We addicts have a way of "assuring" that everything will be ok just to get another fix.

I would tell the doc.  That is just my opinion.

Until Then,
D

NO! this does not sounds horrible and is not a bad thing. Just because you are able to function better on an addictive medication does not make it bad. It means that you have found something that works for you( something many people strive their entire lives to find). Benzodiazepines(xanax, ativan, valiun, temazepam etc.) are etremely addictive and even more dangerous to withdrawal from than any opiate and these drugs are used all of the time to treat depression. I have a few patients that function much better on hydrocodone also. There are many people who need it for pain and nothing else works for them. I am one person who was never able to function until I got on a cough syrup with hydrocodone. None of my specialists could ever find a medication to control my sinuses. I have severe allergies and chronic sinus and respiratory infections. This has gone on since I was 2 months old and nothing ever helped until I got on tussionex when I was 19. Until then I was always miserable, I couldn't breathe through my nose until I was 10 years old.

Anyhow, the medications you have been on have probably just not targeted the actual issue you have been struggling with. If you do not have low serotonin levels then SSRI's like prozac won't help you. If you do not have low dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin levels then tricyclic medications like amitriptyline won't help. If you do have a chemical imbalance and the hydrocodone has really resolved many of the issues the problem very well could be with your GABA, serotonin, and some of your natural opiate levels like endorphins. It is very difficult to test just what chemical is out of balance without taking your brain out and looking at it, so as psychologists and psychiatrists we look at symptoms and go from there. Most of the drugs used to treat certain conditions are addictive, that doesn't make it bad to be on them if you need them. They only become bad if they are controllong your life, interfereing with daily activities like work or school and family life or when they pose a threat to yourself and others.

You will find people that will tell you that you have to get off the pills no matter what. However, this just isn't true. Dependence does not equal a "problem" If it does become a problem you have plenty of support here, if it isn't a problem you still have plenty of support here.

Thanks.  I wouldn't steal but I do get them off the web. thats not good im sure.  I think the only reason I can control them is because im a control freak.  I had an eating disorder several years ago and I think i look at this as another control thing.  The reason I have such a hard time giving them up is because I like not being sad all the time.  I try to tell myself that it isn't a problem because it hasn't any negative affects but I still know that it is not right.  I changed a lot in my life the past few years I was a teacher which I just didn't want to do, I wanted to pursue an acting career.  Now I am acting and doing things that I love so I know that has helped me a lot but I know eventually I will have to stop taking the pills.  I just feel helpless because nothing else has seemed to help except norco. However, I am too afraid to tell anyone because I know that they will want me to stop taking them.  thanks again for you advice

It sounds like, to me, that you have a handle on the amount and your not taking more than what's rx'ed - so that's good.  You are also not buying it on the street, I assume, so you don't have to worry with lifestyle issues.  In my opinion, and i am an addict, i think you may have some dependancy issues that you can work out w/ your doc later, but i don't think your an "addict"  PPl like me, again Im assuming, will get pills anyway, anyhow and to the detriment of everyone we love.  we will steal, lie, etc. (and are not that type in any other sense for the most part) to get our Drug of Choice.

From what you wrote, this does not sound like you.  I would come clean w/ the shrink.  Im sure he will be helpful.  and if it's helping you and your not abusing, then I say - keep taking them.

good luck and stick around, alot of knowledgable ppl are here and will answer you better than I could.  I wish you the best.

love, M
