pregnant and addicted to percocet

I need help and am hoping somebody out there can give me some info asap please!!!  I just found out I am about 4 weeks pregnant and couldn't be happier, but i am addicted to percocet and need to kick the habit like yesterday! I have been taking between 300 and 390 mg of 30 mg percocet. i found out 5 days ago, and have started to taper down and have cut it down by %50 already. My questions are have i damaged my baby in these 4 weeks that i didn't know i was pregnant and was taking high doses of percocet? is it safe to taper and eventually stop while pregnant? how do i taper properly? is it safe to go on suboxone, or is tappering off better? this addiction caught me quick, its only been about a year and a half.....so i don't know much about them and would really really appreciate anybodys help......thanks so much in advance.

Just taper down s l o w.........Dont go the subutex route as that is far worse coming off of.  How are you feeling?  You dont want to go fast on this taper as the baby feels what you do.

Hello, I've read your posts, and I am going through a similar sit. I've been taking about 6 perc 5's (30 mg) a day for a few years. And I just found out I'm pregnant, about 6 weeks. I've lowered the dosage drastically (down to 10 mg a day) in the last week, but I haven't stopped completely yet because I thought cold turkey can do more harm then good. I'm just going to wean my self off slowly, but I am worried that I've done damage in the first 6 weeks because of the high dosage. You had your baby right? Was everything OK? Was there any defects? Permanent damage, problems with developing?

Thank you so much to everyone that has replyed with helpful answers. it really means alot to have people care enough to give me advice. i really can't talk to anyone of my friends or family about this because nobody knows. i'm just really scared and want what is best fror my baby. I have a beautiful 3 year old girl who was born very healthy, and i want the same for this baby. I didn't start taking the pills till she was about 1 and a half. what a stupid idea that was! I read that subutex is something that they put pregnant woman on. does anybody know anything about this drug and if it is safe? I also don't want to be on that long either...and is it safe to taper off that as well? thanks again so much for everyones attention to this matter!

Hi gigi,

The fact that you are so early in your pregnancy is good news. You don't need to rush anything as cutting down too quickly is arguably just as bad or worse than staying on the percs. It is probably unlikely that you have harmed your baby(congrats BTW).
Kristen is correct, you should involve your Dr's from the beginning.
There's no need to fear, they will want what's best for you and your baby too.
And so does everyone here. Please take care of yourself and your little one, we'll be thinking of you.

Nick.

it sounds like you are really trying to do whats best for you and your baby. which i applaud you for as many people selfishly do not even try. but it seems like you are doing awesome! i really admire you for doing the right thing. since it is SO early and you know what you have to do- you gotta tell your ob/gyn especially because developmentally, the first trimester is SO important for the baby.  also, for your safety and the baby's so you and your doctor can come up with the best plan. if you tell now, before it is too late, you wont get in any trouble and will get all the help you need with this sensitive situation. i use to work with women in your same position if not worse. withdrawal can sometimes hurt the baby. so great job tapering but make sure you tell your doctor just i case.  if you have any questions dont hesitate to message me. i think i will be able to answer most, if not all, of your questions. please tell your doctor and good luck to you. keep up the great work and dont give up!youre doing the right thing. i will keep you and the baby in my thoughts and prayers :).

It sounds like you are doing great by tapering down.  From what I have read the jury is out on whether or not percocet affects the development of the fetus but it sounds to me as though if you got yourself off in a reasonably quick time that your chances of a normal, healthy pregnancy are good.

When I was pregnant with my second child I had a scare due to something I had taken early in my pregnancy before I knew I was pregnant.  I was fortunate she ended up perfect but the darn ultrasound was indicating an possible abnormality about 7 months along.  It is sooooo worth it to stop any drug that even might damage the fetus.  If I hadn't stopped immediately after learning I was pregnant she could have been malformed.  Of course, some meds don't leave your system in time and anytime is too late but it sounds like you may be all right.  Congratulations for taking such important steps.  Keep up the strength!!!!
