quitting methadone/oxycodone/hydrocodone

ok so here is my question I have taken methadone to get off of the hydro and oxy's and it did work but I felt that methadone was just putting out fire with gasoline it just made me addicted to methadone and they started me off on a high dose.  I decided that enough is enough and I tapered off myself with no help from the doctor I went from 40 mg to 0 in 2 weeks yes in I know it seems hard and impossible to do but I am living proof that it doesn't kill you although the w/d's make you wish u were dead because of the imense pain it causes when u getting rid of it...so i went back to lortabs first it was 10's then they went to 5's then the doctor went to 10 again and It has helped a lot and if you take lortabs as prescribed and I rarely do that to be honest with you but I am trying my best to get out of the house more often and spend time with kids, pets, shopping if i have the money.  My question is what were are the worst of the worst withdrawals from pain meds? In my opinion it is methadone but I could be wrong... thanks

HI Christie.....coming off methadone was by far my worst withdrawal and doing it the way you did im sure it was your worst withdrawal also...its the recovery time that makes it so hard
it takes literately months to start to feel better and I dont know any practical way around it
taking lortabs will postpone it but wont make it go away eventually your just going to have to grind it out or get addicted to the lortabs...I dont know ho long you where on it but if it was a year or longer its a 90day grind until you start to feel better...if you where on it less time
it vary s but a month to 6 weeks is typical ...you wont start to recover till your off of the tabs
so you need to clean out all the narcotics from your body so you can start to heal
keep posting for support this is not ez to do but it is doable good luck and God bless....Gnarly

I think I am qualified to provide a response since your situation is very similar to mine.  I got on methadone to get off hydro and came to the same realization after almost 2 years and then found out quickly that I had been duped into going to the clinic instead of just tapering or going CT from the pills (but that is the past, only good it will do is to learn from it).....I also did a fairly rapid detox going from 20mg to 0 mg in the course of about 3 weeks, which was extremely brutual, but I survived.  One of my biggest mistakes was periodically using hydro to ease the methadone WDs and at first I did a good job, I used them for about 2 weeks here and there and then went fully cold turkey for close to 2 months.  My recovery has still moving extremely slow and I got very depressed and impatient and begin to dabble with hydros once again.  Ultimately, I knew if I kept it up I would be soon headed back to where I was prior to methadone and caught myself in the process and here I am today....talk about a rollercoaster, but everyone has their path.

To answer your question, the WDs from pills are no comparison to the methadone WDs, but that is not to say the pill WDs are a cake walk, but if I had my choice I would prefer pill WDs any day.  Ultimately, it will require the ability to mentally overcome which to me is a far greater challenge than the physical one.  The physical WDs just make us suffer, but the mental will require that we become and remain actively fighting.

I hope this helps and I wish you the best.

Hi Christie,

I am sorry but I don't fully understand your question. Now that you are back on the Lortab, are you looking to get off of them? Let us know and we can recommend some things and support you here.

Hello can anyone tell me how long it takes to come off of ms contin? I have been without now for four days and am now just starting to feel a little bit better but still sick.  I took way too many ms contin to the point where I think if I took 10 it would make no difference and that is bad.  I have cronic pain just like many others have here.

Thx

I've never been on methadone but from what I have read it is the withdrawals are by far the worst compared to any other opiate. There's a member here names Gnarly1 that knows his stuff about methadone. I'm sure he will see your post and comment.
