scared of detoxing-

I have never been on a forum so for me to seek this out I know I have issues. I have been taking 6-8 Norco everyday for 2 years. I will run out in 2 days and I am scared to death. I started taking them after a jaw injury and found out quickly without them I didn't feel as good. I have 4 kids and the guilt kills me. I can do so much with the pills I can cook, clean, run errands, assist with homework, and anything in between. I feel as if I am mourning a family member. The pills have been my "best friend" for so long that I am afraid of life with out them. I have anxiety issues as it is and I am just terrified, I don't have a prescription for them, a friend of mine gives me hers in return I clean her house, and care after her school age kids after school. The fear is killing me and I am hoping through prayer that I can make it. I started to get off of them 2 weeks ago and the sickness for one day was worse than ever I lasted 12 hours into vomiting, diarrhea, cold sweats. the feeling of not even wanting to be in my own skin, and of coarse no sleep. I took more pills and BINGO I felt great! I don't know if I can do this and thought alone brings tears to my eyes. BEGGING for advice on this...I feel so depressed and alone!

You can make it. A lot of it is in your head, and as you now, the wd's are the physical part. Those don't last more than 3-5 days. The good news is there are things you can take and do to make it a little better.

First is Imodium. It settles the stomach and helps with the withdrawals. For a habit your size, it should help a lot!
Another thing you can take is something called L Tyrosine supplement. It helps by metabolizing into dopamine and norepinephrine, which are endorphins that are replaced by the pills, and when you quit the pills, your body doesn't start producing them right away, so you feel like CRAP!
This helps you not feel like crap so much, and also helps with anxiety, depression, all the stuff making you feel crappy.
Take a multi vitamin with b complex, and vitamin C. keep hydrated with gator aid or another electrolyte replacement. Get some excersize, or just do the things you always do. Take hot baths with salts before bed to help you sleep.
The wd's will be over before you know it, and you'll feel better just for getting through that.  keep taking the L Tyrosine.(200mg) It takes about a month for your endorphins to get back to 45-50% of normal, so you will need to take this for a long time until they return to normal.

You can do this, It's a lot of mind over matter stuff, but think how good you will feel is just one month, and not having to take a pill to feel that way!

Come and post often, talking helps when you are going through a rough time.

There is also a Thomas recipe link at the bottom of the page you should look at.
Again, hang in there, you can do this! You are woman! You are strong! 4 kids! Wow! You have to be!

You're right about that!  A wise man here says" it's 2/3 mental - a battle won or lost in one's own mind".  (Hence, he's the community leader :).

It's great that you already KNOW this...prepare yourself  ahead of time with ways to keep yourself busy and distracted.  Your kids should be a BIG help with that!  Exercise is a great way to burn off adrenaline, and get those endorphins going again.

Keep posting, especially once you're done tapering, so we know how you're doing.

Well wishes to you!

Hi Zan!
Sounds like you had a somewhat rough night but not too terrible :)
Tapering is a great idea as long as you're disciplined enough to keep on schedule with the pills.  I think anything that makes the he ll of withdrawals a little easier is worth doing, but others just want to jump c/t and get it overwith.  You sound committed to succeed and I believe you will. Even if the ride gets a bit bumpy, and it will, just hang on tight and you'll do just fine.

Not sure when your Day 1 will be, so keep posting and let us know how you're doing!

Well wishes,

Sandy

last night was the first night I have went without taking the pills! I did alot of sweating and tossing and turning. I was uncomfortable but wasn't as bad I usually wake up and take 2 pills, today I took 1 and will hopefully just take a half this evening. I talked to a friend of mine who is a nurse and she recommended tapering if possible so I broke my remaining pills in halves and hope to taper. Thank You all for your support just in the short time being on here I feel more and more like there is light!    Zan

It's great that your Mother is there to help with the kids, and be there for support. It's a lot better than flying solo

Hi Zan, I feel your pain. Life being chained to pain pills is a living hell. You can do this. So many people have and your no different my friend. You have the courage and strength inside of you. Look at your kids. What if one of them was going through exactly what your going through. You would love them and do anything you could to help them. Now take that same compassion and turn it right around towards yourself. You are not the same person you used to be before the pills so you don't need to be scared. You can create a healthier, happier you! We do this to ourselves for a reason. After you get through the WD, look into some aftercare. This forum is a great place. I don't know if I could have done it without all the love and support here. Your not alone...WE get it! It *****. But what I have been doing the last few days is thanking my body for not giving up on me. Plus, I did this to my body so whatever happens during WD, I got it coming to me. Not making light of it but soooooo much of the freaking out is in our minds.
Hope this helps!
You can do it!!!!!'

Yes my mom knows, she doesn't want to see me suffer alone so she will be there! I am SO thankful for that! I will go to Wal-mart tmrw to look for the l tyrosine but i checked Walgreens yesterday and couldn't find it. I will also get some protein shakes! Thank you so much!

You can find the L-tyrosine at Walmart, Walgreens, just about anywhere. Protein shakes are great for times when you just don't feel like eating anything and they go down pretty easily. :)

That's great that you've cut ties with your friend.  It's an important step in your recovery, especially when you're in the middle of withdrawals.  Does your Mom know that you're going to be detoxing?  It would be a good idea to tell her if you haven't already.  I'm no hero when it comes to pain or nausea either, but this is one battle worth fighting for, and the only way to win is to go through it.

Don't let fear rule you.  As Gnarly says, and is so often repeated around here "you just have to be ok with not being ok for awhile".  Once you get your mind wrapped around the idea that you're going to be "sick" for a bit, you can keep reminding yourself that it will get better, and IT WILL PASS.

Make sure you eat when you can and most importantly stay hyrdated.  Get the tools that will help your withdrawals easier NOW instead of waiting. You'll be glad you did.  I'm glad that your Mom is there for you.  It will help immeasurably not to have to go through this alone.

Good luck and keep posting so we know how you're doing!

Sending you well wishes...

Sandy

No I have stopped watching her children and cleaning her house and told her I am going to get clean. I want this more than anything! I just feel so weak when the sickness comes. I have never been good at being sick and thats when I am afraid! I have my mom here to help me with my kids so its just doing it. I want the freedom but am also scared of never feeling "normal" again. I have never been so afraid in my life....

Hi & Welcome,

All of the things you are saying that the pills help you with is a false sense of security. sure, they do that for a while and then it gets to where you just take them not to get sick. they will turn on you and they will stop working for you. That's a guarantee.

You have a chance now to get through this detox and get on with your life. I hope you will buckle and do it. The physical withdrawal is never easy but it is only a few days and a small price to pay for your freedom.

Are you just detoxing until your friend fills her prescription or do you want to do this for real? If you want this, we can help you with remedies that can help you feel more comfortable during the process. Let us know what you are thinking.

And, if you are going to do this, you will need to lose touch with that friend. The temptation will be too great if you hold on to old people, places and things. this will take a lot of work on your part so it would be good to make the decision now and get yourself set up to be ready to go in two days.

Stick around, there is a lot of great support here.

Boy, do I understand.  I am on day 12 of cold turkey self/detox and it is not easy, but very possible.  What happened to me was eventually the druggie brain became too much to cope with.  I no longer knew who I was and where I began and the pills began.  You will be getting some great advice and support here just be patient.  I am feeling better everyday and am amazed how this site has been a big part of that.  Congrats on asking for help!
