what you are describing are withdrawal symptoms. Long term opiate use can lower your pain threshold in the pain center of your brain so you might be more sensitive to pain than you used to. What are you taking now for the pain?

Hi im new to this site(just found it)Anyway ive been taking pain killers for about
three years now and i just gave them up four days ago.
Ive allways been a really strong person and i never thought this would happen to me.With me at first i was getting them from one of my best friends that got them from yhe d,r for his back but he wouldent take them because of the fear of becoming an addic well i thought i would be fine but now my whole life  has changed.
ive beeen training in brazilian jiu-jitsu for about five years and and i would allways get hurt so having the pills was agreat answer to the pain i would be in from training. Then about 9 months ago my back went out and found my back was really messed up but iwas already taking hydro for along time so when i really needed the pain killers they did'nt work at all.
So i went to my doc and told him and he put me on oxy.He stared me out on the 20's
two in the mornning and the same at night. Then i went in and told him i dont want to take it anymore so he put me on norco's10-325 and then back to oxys 10mg.
in the past year the longest i could go with out would be one day and then i would freak out and try to get some more.
In my case i really did need them and they made it to where i could live my life the way i wanted but now all the things i loved to do i dont do that much and thats when i quit.
so lucky for me i did'nt have to go to rehab or anything i just went to work and im doing this thing day by day.
Now im starting to feel better but i cant sleep most of the withdrawel is gone but i just feel strange.
Im not worried about going back to them ive quit anything i ever did no problem(smokeing, drinking)
Im just want to know how long this feeling is going to last and when am i going to beable to sleep.
im just glad i made it this many days and i know that it's going to get alote better.

yo man your lucky to even be feeling as good as you are after 4 days.  I would say that at the dosage that you were doing that you will probably feel normal in 14 to 20 some days.  I have been on crazy high dosages of oxys and have gone cold turkey for 2 months and was still sick because I was coming off 1600mgs of shooting oxys.  Man I was a competitive martial artist before and really like bjj too,  it makes me sad to think how drugs have taken that away from me.

I have had withdrawals from liquid hydrocodone or codeine, I don't think I had any w/d when I tapered from Darvocet that was a long time ago. I Tapered really slowly, pretty much avoided all physical w/d. I don't do the c/t thing. I mean I have before but I didn't have w/d. Stopping cold turkey can do permanent damage to the CNS, cadiopulmonary system, and digestive tract. Normally not anything readily noticeable, I'ts just that this is my line of work and I've physically seen what going c/t can do to the brain and spinal cord and it isn't healthy for the body to do so. There are a lot of people here who stop c/t and use the Thomas recipe or benzos. and muscle relaxants to help ease w/d symptoms and, though I cannot advise them to do so,I have a lot of patients that go c/t also. If you want to avoid w/d and you are in too much pain then you should taper as slowly as possible. Are you taking something else for the pain? Have you asked your Dr. about other meds for pain like anti inflammatories (flexeril, feldine)? or NSAID's (motrin, naproxen)? or have you tried any of these?

I thought ct did not permanent damage to your body?  What permanent damage can it do to the brain and breathing.

stopping cold turkey can do permanent damage, it won't in every case. Put simply, when you fool around with the neurotransmitters in your body there is always a chance that they will not function properly anymore. For instance, long term use of opiates, having shown to be very safe even over a lifetime in safe doasages, can lower your pain threshold making you much more sensitive to pain, this happens a lot with heroin addicts- little things like a scrape or a cut cause them much more pain than before. My husband sees it all the time with his patients at the methadone clinic, grown men, hard core criminals, literally fussing and whining over a bruise b/c it really does hurt them that much. After stopping the opiate, your pain threshold will not go back to normal. When you take opiates over time the number of opiate receptors increase, in order for things to work properly the body needs to produce enough of the neurotransmitter for all of the receptors. Your body is no longer producing it's normal amount of endorphins b/c the opiates are doing it which is what causes withdrawal symptoms. And even when the body does produce its normal amount again, it's still not enough for all of the extra receptors you now have. Opiate receptors are very widely spread throughout the lungs, large intestine, brain, and spinal cord. This is the cause of the constipation with opiates, they paralyze the smooth mucle of the intestines (opium, when sold over the counter was often given to children for diarrhea) this also accounts for the diarrhea when in withdrawal. You're going from one extreme to another, hot and cold. and this is never healthy. Have you ever seen someone sitting in a spa over 100 degrees and then jump into a cold pool in the dead of winter? This can cause blood vessels to burst, and in extreme cases can send the body into shock which can easily be fatal, and when its a blood vessel right across the face it's not pretty. Works the same way glass does when you heat it up and then cool it down too fast the glass shatters. Opiate receptors are also all theoughout the lungs making opiates ideal for cough, it stops the lung muscles from contracting. There are so many different hormones and neurotransmitters that are secondarily effected by opiates, almost all of your neurotransmitters work together, use some of the same channels and pathways through the brain and spinal cord so the details of what happens is about 3 semesters and 3000 pages too long for this forum so I'm just tryin to give a couple analogies in a nutshell I hope this answers your question.

Oneway,
Wow, 1600mgs..I thought I was bad. I was up to 1000mg a day for almost three years. I started out at 20mgs and worked my way up to that. I could take 1600mg if I wanted to or could afford to though. Today is one month clean. And it took me until now to start feeling normal again...

Darrell
you are lucky if you are feeling ok after 4 days. Good for you and stick with it. It may come in waves..SOme days u feel good and others not so good. Good luck to you...

its a ***** withdrawing / detoxing.

but it does end,

there are some drugs available now to ease the symptoms of withdrawls.

(subutex/suboxone)

my physical pain was less when i quit the pills then when i was taking them?

(i still find it hard to believe that my mind would imagine pain to get more pills, but it did)

being free from the pills is bliss, but its a hard hard road to get here.

yeah i had a lot of money at one point but i ended up putting myself 70 grand in debt doing that much.  i really was feeling like their was no hope but now im 6 days clean.  i was only doing 160mgs this time so it feels a lot easier but ct always sucks.  i remember those days where 20mgs would do it for me, crazy how you can work your way up to that.

Goood, I'm glad the info. could be helpful. There's not really any way to prevent damage from c/t.The only way (aside from extensive and experimental brain surgeries) to prevent damage is to taper, suboxone, or methadone. Which methadone is a much longer road than tapering as it stays in your system up to 30 days. Methadone should really only be for those who need extensive, long term, care being monitored by their counselors and doctors- mostly heroin addicts but there are plenty of people in the program for oxy's, vicodin, percocet etc.The issue is more the psychological and physical state the person is in more so than the drug they were taking. It's just that heroin addicts are much more likely to need this type of care.

i had a easier time coming heroin then oxys but the heroin detox felt way more intense but a lot shorter. i just dont want to be hooked on any other drug that is why im risking going ct.

Have you tried tapering or spoken with your doctor about it? Or have you looked into suboxone? It can have mild w/d symptoms when stopped but unlike methadone, subutex is a partial opioid antagonist and suboxone contains naloxone which is a pure antagonist and suboxone usually has great success stopping the cravings for opiates while safely detoxing you.

How many days has it been? Are you taking anything to help withdrawal symptoms? any NSAID's like motrin or naproxen or muscle relaxants like somas? Clonidine is very popular in detox now b/c it is not addictive the way benzos are and most people feel much better during withdrawal with clonidine. You're not alone in having a harder time coming off of oxys than heroin. Though heroin is terribly potent it still gets metabolized into morphine before reaching the brain and oxycodone is more potent than morphine. They are close in chemical structure like codeine and morphine which are very different from hydrocodone but oxycodone is still much more addictive for many than morphine.

I'm not taking anything.  I'm on day six.  I feel a bit better today.  I'm really afraid to take anything anymore because I just want to be done and not be a slave anymore.  I don't care how much pain I have to go through.  I just want to take the shortest route possible of being drug free.  To be honest I never wanted anything more then this.  I'm tired of having to shoot up everyday or take something to feel better.  I'm honestly sick of all this f*&king s&%t.  I just want my life back.

Wow, I too spent 80,000 in the last year alone on Oxy's. As they were like 40.00 an 80mg pill and I needed at least 14 a day. Ughh..what I did to my life...lol..

But if I can do it, you can do it. Day 6 is great and you should start to feel better by the day trust me. That is when the worst of my w/d subsided. You will do fine...Please keep me posted on your recovery.

I don't even want to tell you how much I spent when I was at my highest point but lets just say I blew through 50 grand in cash that I had saved in a safe in one month.  When your addicted to drugs the most dangerous thing is money.  I am really suprised that you were able to hide withdrawal from your kids when you were on that high of a dose.  I really don't think I could have hid my detox from anybody more then a few minutes when I was coming off my high dose.  It is really crazy to hear another person who has come off high dosages like I did but you actually are succeeding which shows your pain threshhold and willpower.  I really don't want to get into my story anymore because i've told it a lot of times on here but I basically had tons of money coming in and then f*&ked up really bad to the point where I was spending 8 grand a week on oxys.  Life was so crazy back then.  I'm scared to ever be back at that point again.  Oh I know this is so random but their was a person on here that went ct off of 350mg of methadone and she was still feeling sick after 4 months.  WOW.
