would like help.........

I have been abusing oxycontin for about 5 years now and am just tired of the whole thing. I get 70 20mg pills a month for legit pain ( 2 herniated disc's and 4 knee surgeries ) the problem is that I break them and some times take way more than I should, some times 10-12 a day. I want to taper off slowly because I want to minimize withdrawals as much as possible. I have no idea as to how to even set up a good taper plan. I have quit these pills before on two occasions but due to injuries at work and surgery I need something to take away the intense pain. I'm due for a knee replacement in the new year so the pain I have is from bone on bone and it hurts so bad I can't even get out of bed without being in such pain that I can't even straighten my leg. I just would like help figuring out some sort of taper plan.

Hi,

As ricart mentioned, it is a violation of our guidelines to give you tapering information. It is impossible for us to know of any underlying medical problems you may have so providing a schedule could be dangerous. You should work with your doctor and get a good plan in place. He/she may also be able to prescribe something (non-narcotic) to help ease the process.

Please know that tapering is often difficult because as we drop our dose we begin to feel the withdrawal and that often causes relapse. It is best done if someone can help you by holding the medication for you and dispensing them according to the plan.

You should also work with your doctor to find alternative pain treatments. You mentioned that you will be having surgery again shortly and I am certain you will need help afterwards. You won't hear me say this often but you may want to wait until you are done with the surgery to begin your detox and recovery. With any plan you want to set yourself up for success. I would hate to see you get off of the pain medication only to find yourself right back on it after the surgery. Each detox gets harder so if you plan on this, make sure the time is right.

I wish you luck and hope this is over for you soon. Let us know what the doctor says.
