Oxycodone Addiction

Dear Dr.,
About 5 years ago i began to take pain pills off and on.  Most of the time i would take lortab 10mgs.  I would buy these from a friend and take them everyday in the evening (usually about 3 at a time)until my stash ran out.  Once that happened I would just not take anything for a few months until my friend came back in town.

About 2 months ago I was introduced to Oxycodone 30mg.  I started taking half a pill in the evening and now I am up to 3 a night and i take them all at once.  I have been doing this for about 2 months and did not think i had a problem until the other day when my stash ran out.  I had no idea how badly i needed these pills, i tracked down my friend the next day and bought some more just so i could regain normalcy.

I obviously need to quit these things.  However, I CANNOT go to rehab or let anone know about this.  What is the best way to go about doing this?  I would like to detox at home but i am reading crazy things on the internet about the nightmares people have with the withdrawals.  I have also read that you can die from this.

Please let me know because i am really concerned.

Thanks!!!

No, you can just try to do it over some time. Do it slowly and gently. Give us a call if you are having issues.

Thanks so much for your response. I'm going to try and ween myself off by taking 2 pills per night then 1 then half until none. If I am unsuccessful then I will get professional help. Also, by trying this method how long do withdrawals last once you stop using all together?

But in your opinion, how due you think I will due given the amount of mgs I take per day and how long I've been taking them. I'm sure it's different for everyone but do I have a better chance given the fact that I've been using oxy for barely 2 months. Is 90mgs in the evening an extreme amount to try and quit from?

Thanks so much for all you do on this forum!!!

There is really no easy way of detoxing from home. I have dealt with hundreds of addicts who have all told me horror stories of doing it by themselves.  I would only guess that if are successful in doing it at home you don't end up in my clinic. Just in case you are curious, it takes us three to four days to detox a patient and get him/her back home drug free and feeling well on Naltrexone therapy (no opiates).
At home, the basic technique is to space out the pills you take on a consistent manner until you take only one at night, then half at night and then none.  See if your doctor can write you a prescription for some Requip for restlessness, Neurontin for anxiety and malaise, some Flexeril or Soma for a few weeks for muscle spasms and maybe some Seroquel low dose for sleep. It will make withdrawals easier.  Please don't start taking the Oxys again as it will only throw you back into withdrawals once you stop again, or make you relapse.  Valerian and Magnesium is sometimes helpful remedies over the counter.
But, seriously, you must be completely committed to the goal of quitting.  I have written a blog that has rather detailed information about options for detox. If you click on my name and then click on blogs you will see one under that heading.  Take a minute to read it. I hope you will find it helpful.
The main thing of course is the decision that you make and making it a priority in your life, because that will determine what your life will actually be and mean in the end.  I don't want to sound preachy but it is not a decision you make one day, it is a decision you will make every day for the rest of your life.  Good luck to you and take a look at my blogs and my clinic website for even more info on narcotic detox www.mdsdrugdetox.com
