If you stay clean, your baby will also be clean when born and will not go into withdrawals so you will be able to have healthy, normal bonding routine. You will be able to nurse, as long as you continue to stay clean, of course. As to the meconium, anything you consumed after the twentieth week of pregnancy will be found in it, but it does not mean you should panic.
Every state has different regulation and it may vary from hospital to hospital. It can also depend on your OB/midwife. What they do can very much depend on the mother, if you got regular and early prenatal care, was cooperative and followed all instructions; presented as a caring and cared for mother to be, then there may not be any reason for them to test her. However if you or those around you send out warning signals with their presentation, dress or behavior, your health provider can very well test your baby's meconium (poop) without your consent. They can not test you without your express consent and knowledge.
But you should relax they do not just take babies away from their mothers unless there are major indicators for doing so. If you behaves in a measured, reasonable manner, dresses appropriately, shows that you are taking care of yourself, thus of the baby, I'm sure everything will be fine.
Please read read my blog on pregnancy and addiction by clicking on my name in blue and then "blogs". I do hope this pregnancy will have a very happy ending for all involved. Good luck and my best wishes.
They do test pretty often these days. From what I understand anything past 20 weeks can be detected in the childs meconium. That being said, it's very obvious they need to test a child that displays symptoms of dependency. Any time you quit drugs while pregnant is better, for you and the baby. You can do this, I AM sure of this. Godspeed friend, and if you ever want to just talk or vent you can certainly friend me and talk privately. Start today to make a difference!!!!
