Relation between Parathyroid Disease and Hypothyroidism?

I'm going to be making another doctor appointment for this week but just wanted some opinions...

Last week I went to my doctor with complaints of my hypo symptoms becoming even worse, particularly my fatigue seems worse. My heart was also feeling funny along with heart palpitations (Although it seems to be doing better this week).

They did some blood work and said my TSH levels are fine, so I'm going to continue taking the same amount of Synthroid,(he was confused that I was so tired while having heart palpitations which are counter-acting symptoms between hypo and hyper), they said my Vitamin D levels were very low and prescribed me Provigil because of my fatigue (which I believe he prescribed so I would stay awake at work, I don't think he wanted to increase my Synthroid because of my heart palpitation complaint).
My insurance company has yet to accept the Provigil prescription but they're working on getting it approved. It should take a few days.

I guess I'm just a little concerned because I feel that I have a Vitamin D deficiency for a reason and that my doctor should look more into it. I had to call to find out the results and they said that I was going to be put on a vitamin two times a week and that's probably why I'm so tired, but that's it. He seems stand-offish recently and I'm not sure why. I may be looking for a new doctor soon.

I'm trying to look online about Vitamin D deficiencies and whatnot and came across Parathyroid Disease. I don't think hypo is connected with that at all, but I'm not sure.

I will be calling to ask for an ultra sound though, because I have yet to have one when I have a family history of Thyroid Cancer and Hashimoto's. I told him that and that wasn't of much concern to him.

Thoughts please, thanks!

If he only ordered TSH for your thyroid - he only tested what the pituitary is telling the thyroid what to do, not what the thyroid is *actually* doing... the docs think TSH is gold, is is more fools gold? You need more actual thyroid testing (free T3, free T4 and antibodies) if you want a better idea.

Glad you got the zapper dose of D. When you go off, don't just go down to 1000, go to say 5000iu. Move down from there and up as needed. Make sure always D3.

I was healing slow too - but that can be blood sugar, elevated cortisol etc.

Thank you for your comment.

Honestly, all I did was sit down in the room. Told him I was still extremely fatigued, had heart palps, and I always heal extremely slow. They took some blood, said they would test for some things as to why I may be healing slow and also my TSH levels for my thyroid.

I had to call about 3 days later. They said my Vitamin D level was very low so they prescribed me 50,000 units twice a week for 6 weeks then I go back in to check my levels.

He also prescribed me Provigil for my fatigue which I'm still waiting on my insurance to accept. He's out this entire week.

So next week I'm going to call just to see if I can get an ultra sound because I think that may clear up a lot of questions I have such as Hashimoto's or any possible tumors or lumps on my Thyroid.

Oh there is prescription vitamin D - a huge mega dose you take once a week - why did he not give you that?

I have hypoparathyroidism. Mine is from surgery - but I read up on the sites and stuff.

As far as I know - thyroid and parathyroids are completely separate systems. You should ask for some calcium tests - urine calcium, PTH, IONIZED calcium as well as serum calcium and there is a special scan for the parathyroids. I don't really think docs are really good with PTH... mine is super low (I have one strangled little gland left) and they just don't have a clue. When I was looking into it, only a few doctors really treat it - like bone endos (not regular, neuro or diabetes docs).

I take 5000iu vitamin D - low D can make you very fatigued. I also have low B12 from time to time too.

I too have vitamin D deficiency-- along with adrenal insufficiency and b12 deficiency. My endo has me take 2000 of vitamin D daily.
