Is it possible for someone like this to not get cirrhosis of the liver?

My 72 year old Mother in Law is an alcoholic. She is combining klonopin & clonazepam along with 6~16oz beers daily. I notice she is coming out of her room with a look of bewilderment on her face & at other times will enter a room and stare at you. (Kinda creepy) She states that her joints ache. She has been to the physician who has told her she is health except for high cholesterol. She is also going to P/T for her neck and shoulder pain. I look at her and see a distended belly & slight yellowing of her skin. She has been drinking heavily for the last 50 years. Is it possible for someone like this to not get cirrhosis of the liver? I have a hard time believing that her doctor hasn't seen the condition she is in. I am frustrated at this point and she has no intention quitting her drinking at all. Any input would be greatly appreciated~Thank you in advance.

It is truly SHAMEFUL that a doctor would NOT see the forest through the trees here! And to prescribe benzos on TOP of all the alcohol! To NOT get cirrohsis with all of this?Sounds like there is some damage already from what you describe. It is unlikely that she will give up the alcohol after 50 years.Do you have siblings? If so what is their opinion? Is her husband still living?Does she live alone? What does her son think of this?
