Strong chemical odor

My cousin died from alcoholism a few years ago. When going through her personal effects I noticed a very strong chemical odor permeating everything but most noticeable in her sleeping space even inside storage boxes that had not been opened in years.
Just recently this same strong odor has become noticeable in my son's apartment. He too is an alcoholic.
I'm seeing the odd reference to this chemical odor online but most references are to foul breath or hangover odors... that is not what I'm referring to.
I've even been in contact with a Dr. who specializes in addictions and she had no knowledge of what I'm referencing.
Am I imagining things or has anyone else out there experienced this odor.

I have smelled this before with alcohol, including me when i was in active addiction.  People who "huff" also smell of chemicals.  I hope your son finds his way out of addiction.  How are you doing with all of this?

Yes I have, I had a best friend that drank so much that she would sweat the toxins as her liver could not clear them It came from her pores I could not sit with her in a car. I also smelled this with people that did speed Myself included.. I have also smelled this with opiates when used in large amounts. I describe it as a burning wire smell.. I hope your Son finds the Strength to Free himself.. lesa
