IGE levels

My son had a rast test done when he was 4 and i was informed that his IGE levels were above 7200 and normal was 14. I was also told at that time the Doctors(pediatric allergist) couldn't help him and for me to just do my best. I am wondering if there are others out there who have numbers like these? Or if we are truely a rare case. Doctor claimed he was a text book case.

I know it has been years since you've posted this, but I just want to share my experience with whomever stumbles across this page. It started 10 years ago when I was 8 and got strep throat for the first time. We treated it and everything seemed normal. Over the next 2 years I had steep throat 5 more times before finally getting them removed. It was odd contracting strep that many times, but was looked past at the time. Even with being precautious and keeping up with my shots every year, I seemed to catch every little bug around. On top of that, light colds would turn into nearly full blown flu symptoms even though I was testing negative for all related viruses going around. The most traumatic thing that began to happen was what finally got us to look into it was allergic reactions to random foods, and inconsistently. Some days my throat would swell up when I ate bananas, the next day I'd snack on them all day. That and after getting this false flu 5-10 times a year, we finally got serious testing done. I was 12 when I went in for some blood testing and urinalysis to look into my igE levels and eosinophils. Both levels were astonishingly high. My igE levels at the time were over 16,000. Over the next years, I had a biopsy and upper endoscopy that really showed what was going on with my case. I had visible eosinophil deposits along my entire esophagus and on my stomach. That's when I was diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis. Over the years, especially after puberty, my levels reduced drastically. My condition is manageable now and my igE levels have dropped to 1900, and eosinophil deposits have reduced by 40%. Not ideal, but it has made overall fatigue, pain, and allergies down to a point where I can live a relatively normal life, with some minor, legal, self-medicating to help me through hard nights. Your son was young at the time of that test, I am very curious to hear about how he is now.

My seven year old son's IGE level is 16,000 and he has severe food allergy to wheat, soy, milk, egg, peanut, treenuts and many evironmental allergens. I put him on strict diet and he has showed no signs of improvement. I heard about food challenge for peanuts to help kids grow out of it. Not sure any doctors in NJ/NY area does that.

Has your son been tested for low growth hormone or adrenal insufficiency? My son's sudden emergence of allergies turned out to be from secondary adrenal insufficiency and low growth hormone (due to a pituitary cyst). He also held on to his primary teeth a bit longer than normal. He was eight when symptoms and allergies started, almost eleven before an MRI found the pituitary cyst. Hopefully, this has nothing to do with your son's problem, but please keep adrenal and pituitary disorders in mind. They are more common than most doctors realize, I have found.

My son is 10 yrs old.  He tested pos to grasses, trees, molds, dust, wheat, soy, peanuts, walnuts, shellfish, dogs, cats, and so on.....all category 3, 4 or 5.  His IgE level is 2137.  He has severe eczema and moderate to severe asthma.  He had immunotherapy at age 2 and again at 5 with no improvement.  He is being referred to an immunologist for Xolair treatment.  I work in pulmonary office and have given Xolair shots to patients, but we don't provide them now as there is no profit from this.  I'm curious about the Hyper IGE syndrome  because he has another strange issue of retention of his primary teeth.  He was also told he has Kyphosis.  Does anyone know more about this syndrome?

When my daughter took Singular, it helped her reactions significantly but wasn't a cure-all.  Just an idea maybe they will try .. helped a lot with her oral allergies, and environmental and topical ones, too as well as her asthma.

Approved for allergies in the US now.

High levels of IgE are usually caused by allergies, asthma, otitis media, (ear infections) eczema, sinusitis, or simple viral and bacterial infections of some kind.

Once the problem is diagnosed and treated, either with antibiotics, antihistamines or steroids the IgE levels should show a decline in numbers.

Was your son treated for anything and was another IgE level taken?
