DERMOGRAPHIC ALLERGY

have this skin problem, I tried all the delicate and for skin sensitive products but it doesnt work. Everytime I scratch my skin it leaves a bumpy marks and it will disappear probably after 10 to 20 minutes. I was told by a friend that it is a dermographic allergy. What is a Dermographic allergy and what causes this kind of allergy? What are the stuff that I must avoid? is there any cure? I am so feed up with it. Thank you so much.

Hi.. I was diagnosed with dermographia about 8 years ago.. couldnt understand why I had heated itchy patches which moved from place to place on my body at random.. not to mention the welts and comments from people saying I had lipstick on my face [ where I had just scratched an itch!
Tried many things, including diets but the best relief I get is from a twice daily dose of periactin [ anti histamine]  I also tried cortisone treatments a few times but that didnt last long. Just this week I tried to switch anti histamines for a less strong one but now Im paying the price !! Just read about trying to be gluten free... does anyone out there know of any success with this ?? I will  try anything.. The periactin is fantastic for covering the wandering itchiness but I still get marks and welts which dont bother me but they probably look a bit dodgy !! Any suggestions GRATEFULLY received !!

Hi,

From what you describe it indeed does look like dermographism. It would be advisable to consult a skin specialist at the earliest for a proper clinical evaluation.

You would also need to get etain blood tests done, and if required an allergy testing done too.

Do you have any other symptoms too or any past or family history of allergies?

The other questions can only be answered by you yourself or your specialist.

You would know which substances to avoid - any of those which cause an allergic reaction or symptoms should be avoided.

Till you see a doctor, you could take oral antihistamine medications for your symptoms.

Let us know about how you are doing and if you have any doubts.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

hi there :)
i have the exact same thing!  its been a year and a half since i first got it.  dermographism is also known as "skin writing".  i posted a message on this forum a while back.  interesting reading if your interested.  My title is called "Chronic Hives.. driving me nuts".  I've had over 100 replies about it including other peoples stories.
First thing you need to do is see an allergist and rule out any food allergies that you aren't aware of.
Here is a website about dermographism.  http://www.dermnetnz.org/reactions/dermographism.html
I have read alot on this... got all my blood tests done to make sure i didn't have an underlying condition.  all came back perfect so my next option i guess is seeing if there is anything toxic, like metals etc that can be causing it.
please feel free to ask questions cause there is alot of us out there that are suffering the same thing.
best of luck to you :)
