High eosinophil count....

My 6 yr old son has a high eosinophil count, 24 percent (on 3/31/08) it was rechecked on 4/14 this time it dropped a bit to 21 percent, he is being rechecked again on monday 4/28. His dr told me that is usually means some kind of allergy, asthma, parasite....but isn't that a bit high to be allergies? the rest of his labs look pretty good, any ideas?

Hi,

Naturally his Eosinophils will be high he has leukemia. High Eosinophils are only high if you have cancer, parasitic worms, allergies, tumors etc. Although this is only my opinion, if his Eosinophils is slowly going down towards the correct values, it could be that his condition is being corrected or reversed. Ofcourse just my opinion, because if you have example a tumor, your Eosinophils will be high, if you don't have a tumor your within normal values, if its slowly going down from a high unit, it maybe it's being corrected.

cheers...

Hi,

There may only a mild correlation. Perhaps, you should check with your reg ped. He may be able to help better. i dont have an opinion here. i think it would be unlikely.

Best regards

Last night my son starting running a temp of 103.9, now he does tend to run high temps when he is sick so this temp did not shock me. I did take him in to see his reg ped today and he thinks it is just a flu/virus type thing since his ears/throat are fine. He has a bad cough and the fever, thats it, tylenol and motrin bring it down to the low 100's but as soon as it starts to wear off his temp is back to 103. I'm just wondering if this temp would have anything to do with the high eosinophil count he had (which is now normal at 6 percent) I'm sure its just a fluke, but thought I'd ask....thank you,

Yes, I went to the links, acually beffore I posted here I checked out those links plus many more. Right now his Dr is just going to continue doing his scheduled lab appt unless there is any changes in his health. My son does have exzema from time to time, but no real allergies and no asthma symptoms, He seems to be very healthy. With everything he has gone through we watch him very close, also we just lost our 11yr old  daughter to the same leukemia 5 months ago, so our dr's are great about doing any test they think may help. Thank you for your help. I will keep you posted, his next set of labs are on May 19th.

Thanks for your respone, I know I left my post a litte vauge. I wanted to see waht your first impressions were before I posted all the other stuff. First off he went back today and his count was down to 6 percent, very good! He had no symptoms what so ever for allergies/asthma, nothing.....he is though 21 months off treatment for leukemia. When he was 21 months old he was dx with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, that is why he had labs drawn (he goes ever month for check ups) since his level came down his dr is not concerend, but he will continue to have labs drawn as always every month, acaully he goes back on may19 for his reg. visit. I'm confused at why his level was so high, but hoping that becausa it is back down that we will not have any further problems, any thoughts on that? Thank you again,

Hi,

Why was the lood tests done? What other symptoms is he having? Is he on any medications?

Were any investigations done?

There are several causes of a raised eosinophil count including parasitic infections - most commonly seen in young children; allergies and asthma.

You would need to review with your doctor about his symptoms and the confirmed diagnosis.

You could read more about it at the following links -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eosinophilia

and

Let us know if you need any other information and post us about how he is doing.

Regards.
