Is it an allergy?

For about 2 years now I have had mucus in my throat. It's white and sort of "sticky". I think it comes through the back of my nose but I am not sure I try to get it out but with difficulty  many times. I think it's worse at night because I have to get up all the time to clear my throat so my sleep is often disturbed.I have taken medicine for allergies such as xozal but it doesn't go away. I have this all year round and not in the spring time when allergies occur. In the attempt to get the mucus out I sometimes vomit. My nose is often blocked and I have a tingling sensation in my throat and sometimes in the chest. This sensation is unbearable and I cough so it can go away, sometime for a long time. I always get colds in the winter sometimes as many as 6 times a year and the symptoms are really heavy I think this condition or whatever it is, is the the cause.I have been to 4 doctors so far but nothing one even gave me cortisone pills. It was OK when I was taking them but after that the same again.
I am a teacher and the cough disturbs my work. I am at my whits end at the moment.
Is there anyone who could help me?

You guys are describing my life for the past several years.
Do any of you develop sinus infections or bronical infections from this?
My doctor is alway diagnosing me with one or the other but these are all my symptoms. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.

The doc suggests exactly what I did.  Though you may not have exactly what I have, it sure sounds like it.  I went thru a head ct, exrays, allergy testing all negative.  I finally got an appointment with an ENT who stuck a device in my nose and down my throat to tell me " well you ahve post nasal drip and there is nothing I can do for you." to paraphrase.  He told me it was neurological and therefore untreatable.  this process took year to go through.  During that time I learned, thru trial and error, some items that brought some mild relief and later one that brings alot of help.
1.  Water only mildly helps with the problem at night, Sodas like diet Coke Pepsi, or even diet A&W root beer help alot more for assiting with the clearing of the mucus.
2.  Chocolate helps alot more.  I found that this mucus is terribly thick and quite sticky.  I started using the Kirkland weight loss shakes from Costco trying to lose weight and found that the chocolate shake tends to allow me to much more easily cough out this nasty stuff.  I think it actually coats it and makes it much less able to sticky.
3.  I tried a dozen different Nasal sprays from the doctors and over the counter and only 1 helped, That was Vics synex in the mister.  that helps, everything else does nothing.

4.  The Big one.  I will simply copy what I have typed to others about this Please take it for what it is, something I have found that helps GREATLY:

I  have had this same problem for about 10 years as well.  To the point of wishing i could simply die.  I progressed to the point of not sleeping for more then 5-10 minutes ever becasue of the choking.  I saw the docs and they all said "I can't help you"
I found an add on the internet that was for treatment of Post Nasad Drip and bought the product -- It was 3 essential Oils. I paid $90 and had to wait for them to arrive and later found I could buy the products online or locally for much less.  What you need is (Cinnimin Spelling) leaf extract, Clove extract, and Thyme extract) and what is called a facial sauna ( one is called a head and chest breath steam at walgreens).  You place a drop or 2 of each in the measured amount of water and allow the device to heat up to produce steam.  You then breath this steam in for about 2-3 minutes.
Understand this process will tell you if you are using enough or not or too much.  Just breath normall inot your nose.  If you cannot breath thru your nose breath thru your mouth eventually your nose will clear after a few days.
Do this treatment every couple hours for the first 2 days then once a day for the next week, then once a week after that.
It was magic for me, after all that choking and hacking to try to clear my throat and lack of sleep, sfter the first day, I slept peacfully for 8 hours.  I had not done that in over 5 years.  This was a godsend.  I hope this helps you as well.

I hope this helps

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,

The symptoms that you are having are suggestive of post nasal drip.

Post-nasal drip (PND) occurs when excessive mucus is produced by the sinuses. The excess mucus accumulates in the throat or back of the nose. It can be caused by rhinitis, sinusitis, or laryngopharyngeal acid reflux. It can be enhanced or sometimes even caused by allergies.

Pls check out with an ENT specialist if you are having chronic rhinitis or sinusitis. If you have chronic sinusitis then it can lead to continuous production of mucus and less drainage leading to post nasal drip.Transillumination test and X-Ray or CT sinuses can help in diagnosing it. If allergic rhinitis is the cause of PND then it can be diagnosed by skin ***** tests or blood tests like RAST.

Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing and if you have any additional queries.
