Could Sneezing cause brain problems

This is curiosity kills the cat question. It's heredity on my mom side to sneeze a lot. You know people sneeze 1-3 times in a roll or at a time. well me its more like 10-20 times at a time. Been sneezing like this since i can remember. When i was 4-6 yr old i felt a sneeze coming on i told my brother to count it. When i was done i asked him how many i sneezed and he said he didn't know for sure he stopped at 30 and i continued on. when i was in 8th grade 13 yrs old i sneezed in choir class. the whole class counted aloud for the fun of it and i sneezed 80 times in a roll. If i try to hold in a sneeze it will come out the other way by flatulence. Therefore no matter what i did i always got laughed at in school. in high school i think sophomore year i was at least under 16 i had a bad bad cold for the fun and my gut told me i should count sneezes for that day. in less than 8 hours i sneezed 15 different times adding up to over 100 sneezes by time i got home i had a pounding headache and chest pain from sneezing so much. note some sneezes go longer and some shorter than others. i usually sneeze once a month or more determines if i have a cold and allergies. very rare i will sneeze under 5 times. I would like to know if excessive sneezing over long period of time would cause any problems at all.

Hi allegra_dl, I believe that Ms. Paderla is right. You might be suffering from allergic rhinitis and so as your mother and grandmother. This is a condition wherein sometimes people inherit the disease and may pass to other generations. This kind of allergy does not only concern weather changes but also other allergens like dust mites, pollens, etc.

well thank you but i am not for sure if you comprehend. it is hereditary my mom sneeze same way and so does my grandmother 5-10 times if not more in a roll. It doesn't matter what season it is i still sneeze multiple times in a roll. I was just curious about if sneezing effect the brain since i have heard if you hold in a sneeze it can kill brain cells.

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Repeated sneezing episodes can cause muscle pain. Sneezing can trigger muscle spasms and aggravate pinched nerves, both of which may result in pain and discomfort. However it is unlikely to affect the brain. Your symptoms could be due to allergic rhinitis, here the symptoms are similar to a common cold, but they are usually more persistent and show seasonal variation. The individual responds to an allergen, which can be in many forms like dust and household mites. It appears that you are suffering from such a phenomenon.

You can tackle this problem in the following ways: Prevention and Therapy during attacks.

For prevention:Try to maintain an allergen-free environment. Substitute all synthetic and cool materials with cotton ones. Remove all dust-collecting household articles like carpets, bedspreads etc. Alternatively an allergy specialist may try to identify the offending allergen and try to desensitize you.

Using low dose steroidal nasal sprays, are very effective. The steroid in the spray is very low and acts only locally. Two puffs in each nostril two times a days for about a month. The effect starts only after 2 weeks of therapy.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
