Xyzal twice a day?

Okay, here is my story,I am 28 and I have just been diagnosed with chronic hives and swelling, I am allergic to myself.....FUN! After 8 months of constant hives, lip swelling, eye swelling and finger swelling, i went to an allergist and got prescribed Xyzal. It worked great for the first 2 weeks and i was over joyed to have my life back! But the past few days, some hives have started to come back. I have been taking benadryl along with the xyzal as needed. I was wondering if I could take 2 xyzal a day instead o 1. The only other medication that I am on is ortho cyclin birth control. Would I be okay if I took a 5 mg of xyzal early in the morning and then another in the late afternoon? Thanks in advance!

Thanks!!  I talked to the nurse practitioner who consulted with my allergist and she said taking two should be fine.  It's doesnt really make me sleepy so I will start taking one in the morning and one at night.  Hoping for the best!!

That's a lot of Xyzal.  I take 5mg/day and it's the most beneficial antihistamine I've ever taken.  I've taken 10mg before and it knocked me out...lol.  If I feel I need more antihistamine, I add Benadryl, but it's not often that I need to do that.

My answer: I've heard of people taking 10mg/day for hives and severe itching.  I'm not sure how the dosing would be, but I can't imagine taking that much of it in the morning/daytime because it's so sedating.  It's a 24 hour medication, so maybe you could take one at night and one in the morning so you're not so tired during the day.  If you don't get sedated from it, then don't worry about taking it during the day.

What you really should do: Call your allergist and tell her that you're getting your hives back.  She'll tell you whether she wants you to take 10mg/day of Xyzal or do something else and whether you need to make an appointment ;)
