Hello and hope you are doing well.
The symptoms could be due to Bronchiolitis, which can cause bronchial spasm and repeated coughing, more so in the night. For therapy bronchodilators are given as syrups or inhalers.
They may cause dilatation of the airways, relieve bronchospasm and hence may be causing cough. This is important as it helps to bring out the secretions thus clearing the obstruction and the infection.
Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

Could be allergies triggering this response .. so sorry to read your post. Has your doctor considered eliminating things like milk from his diet for a while to see if it gets any better?
