Hello,

Unfortunately, skin tests, patch tests,RAST and food challenge test are the only tests for finding out food allergies. However the gold standard in food allergy testing is the double-blind placebo-controlled food challenge (DBPCFC) under careful supervision in a hospital, but it is time consuming and costly.

You have asked for a web link providing information about food allergies. One such good link is http://www.food-allergy.org/page2.html
Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing.

Are there any blood tests that will show food sensitivities?  It's kind of puzzling why the ones you mentioned to me in the past don't show any of the food sensitivities that I definitely have.

For example:  Lettuce and spinach were tested and came back negative.  But, lettuce and spinach will make me nauseous and even to the point of vomiting.  This has only been the case for the past few months.  Now, I am afraid to go near these vital greens.  I'm hesitant even with some of the other greens.  I know I can't eat dandelion greens, because they're in the same family.  I have since learned that these greens are all related to sunflowers.  The dandelion being related to sunflowers is easier to see, because of the shape of the flower.  But, I never would've placed lettuce and spinach in that category 'til some people at the supplement store did some research for me while I was in the store.  I was trying to figure out if an herbal supplement that the neurologist wants me to try was going to work for me or not.  I had mentioned the sensitivities to lettuch, spinach and dandelions, as well as calendula, marigolds, chamomile and echinacea.  That's when they told me that these are all in the sunflower family.  Great, that wipes out a huge category for me.  I know that I'm sensitive to sunflower seeds, so I stay away from sunflower oil, because it's obviously the same thing.

The same thing has happened with everything that I know I have a sensitivity to, including latex, which I know will burn my skin.  And, the off-gassing from rubber products will make me nauseous and will cause me to have problems with my reactive airway disease (asthma).

The one thing that has been consistent as a true allergy, though, is birch.  So, I know birch is the main culprit behind the whole thing.  I obviously know about cross reactions.  Although, I don't mind links to good sites that have information on cross reactions, such as which foods are cross reactions to other foods and other natural elements.  I have good reason to suspect Oral Allergy Syndrome, due to the birch pollen allergy and the laundry list of food sensitivities.  I know that certain foods will cause me to have those little blisters in my mouth.  The most obvious ones are citrus.  They're not the only ones.  It's not just acid containing foods that do this either.

So far, the only way I've been able to figure out food sensitivities is through trial and error.  I've gone through the elimination diet.  I'm pretty much stuck with staying on this diet permanently.  Everything on the list given to me by my naturopath, the 16 things on the list causes me problems of some sort.  Some aggravate my GERD.  Some aggravate my IBS.  Some aggravate both.  Several cause other problems, too.  While investigating these food sensitivites, I discovered sensitivities to sulfites.  I knew I was sensitive to alcohol, so I wouldn't drink the wine I was cooking with.  The foods tasted great, but I ended up feeling like I had the flu.  And, then I discovered the heart rhythm issue associated with sulfites.  Not worth it.

Not all the foods that the allergist can test for were tested, but it's pretty clear that if the skin tests show up negative and the RAST tests show up negative for the ones that they have tested for that more than likely they'll all show up negative.

Are there any other tests available that would be more likely to show food sensitivities?  It's so strange that I can have such strong adverse reactions and have no positives on the allergy tests.  Yet, I'm clearly sensitive to these foods.

Oh, and one that is really something is the gluten and lactose intolerances.  To have those show up negative is something, too, since I have Celiac.  My young nephew tested positive for Celiac this past year, too.  After I found out that I had Celiac, I told my brother to test his kids and even himself, because it's usually genetic.  I found out that not all Celiacs have chronic diarrhea, and not all of us are pencil thin because of this either.  If we had such classic symptoms, we would've been diagnosed much sooner in life.  It seems like gluten and dairy should've showed up on those allergy tests, but they didn't.  Yet, I definitely have these "sensitivities", and I definitely do better when I avoid all gluten and dairy.

With such a long laundry list of food sensitivies and still having certain symptoms in spite of being so careful with my diet, it would be wonderful if there were blood tests available that would show food sensitivities "hidden food allergies" that aren't going to show up on the standard tests found in the allergist's office.  Obviously, the skin tests and the RAST tests just aren't going to show these sensitivities for me.  Do you know of any other tests that might show these food sensitivities?

Hello,

The only treatment for prevention of food allergies is not eating the food/ingredient to which you are allergic even if the ingredient is present as a hidden ingredient. Vegetable oil is usually a blend of oils. You can be allergic to any of these oils.

I suggest getting a food challenge test and elimination diets done to identify the allergen to which you are allergic.Pls consult an allergist for that.

Hope it helps .Take care and pls do keep us posted in case you have any additional queries.Kind regards.

I know exactly what your going through, for a year all I could eat was chicken, strawberries, bananas, spiniach, potatoes, turkey, and soy products. I only lost about 30 lbs my junior year of high school, and now I am allergic to out of that group soy, and bananas but since I gained rice, and corn (still sensitive). My senior I gained that weight back through better diet, then this year I have gained about 30lbs more through a even better diet, and contant hot meals.

The best advice I can give you is to try A. Consult a registered dietition, that is familier with restricted diets, ask your allergist, they will probably tell you to do a food challenge, which is basiclly what it sounds like, you try the food and see what happens, and you write everything down in a note book including your reactions.

B. Probably in the food challenge they will suggest some exotic foods, some of which you probably will find you can eat. One food I would suggest is buffalo, or also known as Bison, virtually no one is allergic it.

I don't know where you live but Allergy Accociates of LaCrosse Wisconsin is a great allergy clinic, that is where I got help, they also use sublingual drops instead of allergy shots.

Wow, I don't know.  I have a lot of food SENSITIVITIES myself, which are sort of like allergies, but not as severe.  They're still bad enough.

The only suggestion I can even think of is to see if you can work with a naturopath--along with your allergist--and see if working with the two of them together can come up with a plan that will work better for your body.

I don't really know what else to say.  I'm having some issues with food right now that are causing me to lose an enormous amount of weight.  At first, I needed to lose the weight, but now I'm at the point where my doctor is concerned, because I'm not trying to lose the weight.  I'm sure being underweight is a serious concern for you, too.  I'm not underweight--yet--but the idea is to keep from becoming underweight.

I hope my suggestion will help you.  I don't know what else to suggest.  <3
