reaction to amoxicillin????

I had strep in Nov and was givin amox and even though I knew better didn't take the entire supply. I took it about 6 days, my throat hurt again about a week later so I took 3 more pills and was fine, so I thought. A few days later I began to have these red dots, I say dots because nothing is in them yet they are raised not a flat red spot. They do not itch nor are they painful. I went to my Dr and to 2 er's because nobody seems to know what this is or how to get rid of it. They are covering my lower back, on my arms, legs, stomach, and have had a few in my hair. They stop at my ankles, wrist, and neck. I have none on my feet, face, or hands. Is this because I did not take the entire RX or is it a possible reaction? Showering seems to make them worse, they become dark red and seem to mulitply in seconds, then hours later they are pink and seem to have less of them. Dr only seems to give meds for itching when they don't itch! How do I get rid of this?!?!?!

The shower did not affect me at all, it was just the heat, my showers are very hot. It did not make them worse or less... go to www.google.com search the images for gutatte psoriasis. Those pictures look like I took them of myself and posted them, check and see if it matches any of your spots. Please make sure to mention this to your dr and remind them you are on amoxcillin, since my dr who gave me amoxicillin told me he had no idea what the spots were. I have had them nearly 2 months now, its not itchy but good Lord are they annoying and just gross to look at! Good luck.. OH and the dermatologist said do NOT take oral sterdoids so do not let them give you those for anything. You can take topical ones but not the oral ones. I was told it will make the spots go away but they will come back 10 times worse from head to toe! Hope this helps and good luck! If your dr gives you any other suggestions please let me know!

Hi there,

Just wanted to share with you that I seem to have the same symptoms.  I've taken Amoxicillin for 8 days now and woke up this morning to find small red non-itchy spots on the back of my hands, up my arms, stomach and most numerous of all - on the legs but only above the knees.

I'm seeing the doctor tomorrow morning (I'm based in Scotland) and will let you know what he suggests but I take it your advice is not to shower until they disappear?

Two of the four medicine I received are called halobetasol which I use for 14 days then when that is gone I have to use triamcinolone, a whole pound of it! I have a medicine for my scalp since I have the bumps on my head but not bad, which has not been filled yet and one other medicine Im not sure of the name Im suppose to pick those two up tomorrow since they were unavailable at the time I dropped them off. And either use the tanning bed or go to the beach lay in the sun and swim in salt water afterwards, which Im not about to do in 30 degree weather! :)

Hi,

Glad that you could finally get an appointment and see a dermatologist.

Like i was saying in my previous posts, looking at the lesions and a proper clinical examination is most important for a correct diagnosis.

Let us know how you are doing and how well are you responding to the medications.

What medications have been prescribed?

Keep us posted.

Regards.

Well finally I get answers and medicine that should clear this up in 2 months are less. A dermatologist happened to be nice enough to fit me in and let me know you can get psoriasis from a sore throat! Never would I have guessed that one. So now I'm on medicines to clear it up. I pray he is correct since still nobody has taken my blood or a sample from the bumps. So we will see. He also advised me to get in a tanning bed 5 mins a day adding 1 min for 2 weeks, apparently the UV helps clear it up since I can not get into sun light in the middle of winter. So we will see, and drinking alcohol seems to worsen this so its a good thing I do not. I was also told if I were to take oral steriods for this it would go away and come back 10 times worse so Im glad I didnt do that when I was given them before. Only reason I chose not to was because I will not take meds when a doc out right says I do not know whats wrong with you but try this. I think not! Thanks for all your answers! Lets hope this works!

Hi,

Get a blood work done and ask your doctor if your platelet count and eosinophils levels are in the normal range.

Also you should try to avoid alcohol and smoking.

Ask your doctor if a short course of steroids would help.

Do keep us posted.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

I understand that but even my primary dr can't get me an appointment until March. My insurance is not accepted by hardly any offices in my city, only 2 so its hard to get an appointment. But let me ask this, is there anything over the counter I should try to see if it helps since I have been to my dr plus 2 seperate hospitals and yet the only thing anyone wants to give me is anti itch cream and send me home without an explanation as to what I have. I have been told if I were alergic I would have other symptoms than just the bumps like fever, itching those sort of things. I tell them repeatedly I am not itching so after 2 weeks of trying 3 different creams I no longer bother to get the rx's filled, its pointless to me. I was told to try benedryl on another medical site but I do not want to be sleepy alot and it will knock me out. When Im sick I take childrens meds and sleep all day!

Hi,

Like i said looking at the lesions is very important and also a dermatologist will definitely need to be consulted.

You could try keeping your skin moist, drinking plenty of water and fluids.

Try to talk to your physician and see if he/she could arrange an earlier appointment with the dermatologist.

Do keep us posted.

Regards.

I am 27, and yes I have had the vaccination. I have never had chicken pox nor measles or anything more serious than a cold or strep throat. I have not changed any thing in my home as far as detergents or anything that can cause a reaction. I am a very picky eater, and my children have asthma and allergies so I always buy the same products and things of that nature.
When I went to my primary Dr he thought it was the beginning signs of scabies at first, game me three RX's, nothing cleared so I went back to him and he told me it was not scabies but he was unsure what it could be and if it continued to go to the ER so I did. There they knew nothing, just told me to try and get a dermatologist appointment, so I have tried that. The offices here are not taking new patients until March. I am assuming if it were a reaction to the medicine that it would be gone now, as it has been 2 months. Some days I wake up thinking Great! Its going away, but once I shower they are dark red again. They get flaky where the skin is dry and falls off, almost resembles the spores on warts. I was told to only shower not take baths due to soaking in the water that contains whatever falls of the bumps.I don't want to wait 2 months for an appt, but looks as if I have to.

Hi,

It would be difficult to say anything without having a look at the lesions and a proper clinical examination.

You could be having reaction to the drug. the chances that it is because of missing the medication are minimal. Other than that, it could be due to some unrelated cause.

You need to consult a dermatoloist or skin specialist for a confirmed diagnosis. Only then can appropriate mediications be prescribed.

Till you get an appointment - keep the area clean, wear lose clothes.

What is your age? Have you been vaccinated for chicken pox and measles?

Do keep us posted on how you are doing and what the skin specialist tells you.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.
