This would depend on why it's swollen.  Liver cleansing and treatments is actually one of the things all herbal traditions do best, but it depends on the cause.  And you can't do a lot of liver cleansing when a person is on medication, because it can clean the medication out of the system.  As for red yeast rice, while it does help with cholesterol, it is much weaker in action than lipitor.  Usually a combination treatment is used in natural medicine for high cholesterol, the most important being raising the good cholesterol.  Because your mother is diabetic, which complicates all of the body's processes, this is too complicated for us to answer for you -- only a professional can help you here, perhaps, in an ideal world, a good naturopath or herbalist or holistic nutritionist working with her physicians to come up with a dietary treatment that helps her body become stronger and better able to avoid the consequences of diabetes.  Also depends on whether it's Type I or Type 2 diabetes, given the latter is caused by diet and therefore controlled by diet.
