He is a very active man and even goes to the gym. We don't eat junk food and he is good about supplements. The GABA would be worth trying. He is taking an Ayurvedic supplement which includes ashwagandha (recommended by HAVA) and that has helped to lower blood sugar. Like all normal people, occasionally he cheats on his diet. Thanks for your advice.
Don't know anything about the substance you mention, but the best way to treat Type !! and its consequences is tackling the cause, which is diet and lifestyle, as far as we know at this point. This means a pancreas friendly diet, lots of antioxidants, low on the sugar metabolism scale, etc. There are medications for neuropathy -- I think neurontin is one, and since it's basically GABA, I would guess working on GABA might be helpful. This can be done with B6 (but watch overdoses, it can cause it's own neuropathy) and taurine and most herbal relaxants also affect GABA. Something to research. St. John's Wort, both in homeopathic and herbal form, is helpful for the nerves. Something to investigate, at any rate. But my guess is, if you control your blood sugar, Type II and its effects will be less virulent and might even get to be benign, so that's worth a try if you're willing to give up a lot of what's fun about eating!
Further to "Peripheral Neuropathy," is benfotiamine helpful? I found it on the net, but know nothing about it.
