Surprising Improvement in Emphysema

Question

My lung condition seemed to be getting worse week by week. I was on oxygen 24/7 and was exhausted to the point where I could not even perform therapeutic exercise. My doctor and my therapist thought I should be hospitalized. 

Then, to everyone's astonishment I suddenly got better. I looked back to see what I had done that could have accounted for this changes and discovered it was the use of Lugol's 5% solution. So I upped the supplement and I am getting weaned off oxygen, am exercising, and am even taking short walks outside in the cold weather. This would constitute a reversal of emphysema, which is theoretically impossible.

I found on the internet that a man reversed his mother's emphysema by treating her for a fungal infection that her doctors did not know she had. In fact the son did not know that either, but was willing to try anything. Now I am excited to see what other steps I can take to recover. What herbs or supplements would I need to clear up a fungal infestation (presuming I had one) and what tests should I ask my lung MD to take. He is rather open-minded and would be helpful. Many thanks for any advice you can give.

Interesting comment when I looked on Google to see what Lugol's is.  It says 2.2% is all that's legal in the US now, that there's been a move afoot to make it illegal because it has some use in making illegal drugs, what I don't know.  The article says it should be 8-10% to be effective as a fungicide.  Interesting, don't know the truth of any of this as I'd never heard of the product.  Iodine is a good anti-microbial.  Other good anti-fungals are oregano oil, which as far as I know is the best natural anti-fungal, garlic (raw only, and you want to get the oil as best you can), and others.  There's a good formula by Herb Pharm for fighting fungus, it's an alcohol based tincture.  Colloidal silver has anti-fungal properties as well, but like iodine has to be used in moderation.  The good thing about garlic and oregano oil, of course, is that they are good for you in many ways, so even if you don't have a fungal infection they are nutritious.

Iodine is most often associated with bacterial infections, though I'm sure it has some effect on fungus.  Specific herbs used for fungus do exist.  The strongest is probably oregano oil, which can be taken either in extract form (but it's very hot to the taste) or in gel cap.  Garlic is a very good anti-fungal agent, but it has to be in the right form and from a source that knows how to use it -- it's best used raw.  New Chapter makes an excellent but expensive garlic supplement.  Neem oil is another anti-fungal agent.  These are three among several, but I have to tell you, they aren't nearly as strong as the drugs used as anti-fungals.  I also don't know how you'd know if they were working or not as you don't know if you have a fungal infection.  Always remember that stories on the internet can be valid or made up or misinterpreted -- maybe the person treating it was really working on an approach that included more than just what was reported, for example.  I would think an internal scope would see a fungal infection if there was one, but I'm no doctor.  I've had several fungal infections over the last several years, but they were all topical, but here was my experience with them -- it took medication to get rid of the infections, but they came back.  After the second course of medication, I decided that wasn't the solution, so at the first sign of itching I started to apply garlic oil and it's worked for a couple of years now.  I also took garlic oil and oregano oil internally at the same time.  But I will tell you, the herbs didn't work when I only got to the infection after it was fully implanted.  There are other herbs as well, which you can look up by going to a good health food store and asking to see a topical fungal cream -- they have too many herbs in most of them, so not enough of any of them, but it will give you a list of things that have been used.  I believe the three I mentioned are the strongest, however.

Oregano oil is really hot.  When I need it now I've taken to buying the liquid phyto cap by Gaia.  Very high quality company, and the capsule takes the burn away.

Thank you both for being so helpful. Paxiled, I wasn't taking Lugol's as an anti-fungal, but to make up for a serious deficiency. I had suffered this deficiency many years ago, and had stopped taking iodine, thinking that I no longer had the problem. I have bought the oil of oregano. Even though it is cut with olive oil it burnt my lips, so I shall have to cut it further. 

And hava, I will follow up on your suggestions.  The diabetes advice you gave me for my husband was extremely helpful and he has cut back on his medications as a result.

I think that you two are among the most valuable members of MedHelp.
