Uncontrolled shaking

My Dad recently had a stroke, the second one of the year.   It has left him mentally challenged but physically he is probably 60% or so as good as he used to be.  We are with him 24-7 because were afraid he'll hurt himself.  He has two major issues; one, he will not sleep.  He goes from the bed to a chair to the bed and he will go from room to room setting in every chair and then back to his bed.  He very seldom sleeps more than two hours at any time.  Second, his right foot jerks 24-7.  If he puts it on the floor his foot taps heel first.  It just continues to shake uncontrollably until he goes to sleep and then his right foot moves slightly.  His doctor has him on a medley of medications and now for four months the only thing they can do is add or mix in more medicines.  Has this happened to anyone else or a family member.  I feel as if this is a nerve issue and am hoping that there is a natural remedy for him.  His doctor put him on another nerve pill which cost him 450 for 90 pills and when we told them this week that they were doing nothing, he doubled the medication.  Do the math, he(we) cannot afford this.

Tell dad to do this Yog pranayam everyday, and he will feel calmer and sleep better.
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after one minute.
Anulom Vilom –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 15 to 30  minutes twice a day.
Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

You can massage the feet.
Top of feet - massage with thumb along the 4 channels starting from the toes. The channels run (between the bones) from the space in between toes and up the feet.
Bottom of feet - massage with hands and rough roller, so all points on foot are pressed.
Toes - press and stretch each toe.

I probably wouldn't use kava, as it has been found to be liver toxic for some individuals and your dad is already taking a lot of meds that probably affect his liver.  In fact, I wouldn't give him anything without talking to an expert, preferably the best neurologist and cardiovascular expert you can find.  The meds could be causing this, or his condition could be causing this, but this problem is way out of our league here.

Valerian and Kava are your best bet. Melatonin will help regulate your internal clock and has mild sedative effect.

Valerian have sedative effect and will affect the GABA receptor in the brain ( like the benzodiapines like Valium, Xanax, Clonazepam ). Valeric acid found in Valerian is proven to have anti-convulsive propriety which can help with the shaking. Valerian also contains isovaltrate, which has been shown to be an agonist for adenosine A1 receptor sites. This action may contribute to the herb's sedative effects.

Kava is about the same as Valerian but it can increase dopamine level and inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine due to the Kavain found in Kava.

Also consider to magnesium 500mg.

Best regards,
