Hi everyone! When I first started to visit this forum I was told of how bad statins are, and I was taking one. After doing some of my own research, I found it to be true and stopped taking mine. I recently switched to a new internist who did her residency under who I thought was the best doctor ever at the best hospital in our city. I told her I no longer took the statin and why, and to my surprise you replied "don't take the statin!" So, I think she was confimimg that all this is true. I just wanted to thank everyone who gave me the information on this, and may have saved me from future problems.
I'm taking Zocor to lower my cholesterol. Never thought twice about taking it because my doctor recommended it. Now you've got me thinking twice about it.
Statins linked to low testosterone
Italian researchers looked at data on nearly 3,500 men with sexual dysfunction who visited a clinic at the University of Florence between 2002 and 2009.
When they looked at the records and separated the men on statins from the rest, they found that the men taking the drugs had double the risk of low testosterone, according to the study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
The journal's editor, Dr. Irwin Goldstein, isn't surprised. He sees patients several times a week who say they've had sex problems after starting on statins.
The authors of the study say the drugs appear to block the pituitary gland from signaling the testicles that they need to make more testosterone.
Even without testosterone problems, these meds are bad news. Statins have been linked to debilitating muscle pain, kidney damage and even kidney failure
