Dr found "a couple of mild cognitive issues" in my mom

My mother, 76 years old, was recently hospitalized with a seizure that they determined was due to low sodium that may have been caused or exacerbated by flu. The sodium level stabilized, she recovered and was released.  At followup, Dr said he thought she had "a couple of mild cognitive issues," but wasn't specific and didn't seem all that concerned. Said it wasn't surprising at her age. No referral to a specialist, and no activity restrictions. He said she can drive and do anything else she wants. Other than "be watchful for any changes," he didn't say much else.

To be honest, I really haven't seen anything in the way of symptoms, and I've been looking. She cooks, takes care of herself and the house, carries on complex conversations, and remembers details. She had a TIA two years ago, and has hypertension controlled by medications. She was a lifelong smoker but has recently quit and is sticking to it. Other than that, she is in pretty good health. Her CT scans were clear.

Despite the Dr's seeming lack of concern over this. I am concerned. Should I be, or am I overreacting?

hi, read your moms story and she sounds a lot like my mom, even though they are two different humans, but my mom had a TIA about 5 years before she started to forget things, she was 64 at the time, her dr said TIA can cause alzhelmers later in life and so thats what we believe started moms,

i would keep a eye on her don't take away anything she can do right now, let her live her life when you start taking away they give up.  enjoy her and let her know your there , moms are wonderful people and i miss mine a lot, GODBless her and you ,,,,,Heart

I suffer from chronic low sodium due to adrenal insufficiency.

It may be that she was off from being ill, which heck, anyone can be off when they are ill.

As the doctor made no referrals for testing and just wanted you to be watchful, I would say your concern should be normal in that just watch if she has changes, like you would do for anyone, any age.

Enjoy your time with your healthy happy mom!
