Temeril P

My dog just passed away today with an enlarged heart/ heart attack. He was on Temeril P for his whole life (9 years) . Today Is when I found out he had an enlarged heart (this was never caught before) ..I was wondering could the Temeril P have caused him to get an enlarged heart? His heart was so big that it was pushing up on his trachea which was causing him to breath heavy. Over a good period could this medication/ steriod have gotten him sick where he died?

A dog can cough after any procedure that requires anesthesia because an endotracheal tube is placed down the dog's trachea to deliver oxygen and anesthesia.  The endotracheal can be mildly irritating, and cause temporary inflammation to the trachea.  The Temeril-p acts as an anti-inflammatory.  If the temeril-p is insufficient, an over the counter cough suppressant such as Vicks cough medicine or other over the counter cough medicine may help.  Use 1/2 tsp. 3 times per day.

Our minature poodle had his teeth cleaned today.  Anytime he has had teeth cleaning, he gets a bad cough for about 4 days.  Our vet gave him Temeril-P to be given twice daily.  He is still coughing.  Is this med going to help or should he be on something else for the cough?  He starts on Amoxicillin tomorrow.  Thanks!

I am very sorry for your loss!

Steroids can cause lots of problems but causing a heart to enlarge is not one of them.  Your dog's heart became enlarged most likely due to heredity.
