sudden and unexpected death of my cat

My cat apparently died in his sleep during the past weekend we are not sure why.  He was eating, drinking, using the litterbox normally and he also was interactive/playing normally.  He did have a growing black spot in his eye during the past year which didn't concern the vet at his last checkup.  The vet believes it was probably some underlying heart condition, but the black spot in the eye remains suspicious to me.  I also had a feeling it could be some depression from being in the basement during the weekend by himself, perhaps too much trauma for him?  Any thoughts?

Sorry to hear about the loss of your cat, it is difficult especially when it is so sudden. I would agree with your veterinarian, almost all sudden deaths end up being due to a cardiac arrest and could not have been predicted or avoided. The black spot on the eye is likely nothing but if it was a problem then melanoma is the most likely cause. Melanoma is a malignant cancer however it would not cause a sudden death like this.

I am so sorry to hear that your beloved cat went over the rainbow and I can feel your sorrow for the loss.
I have heard from a similar case and no vet could explain what had happened. An autopsy would certainly reveal the reason but it is very expensive and not all vets are doing it.
