anorexia, bulimia and symptoms- please help me

hello,
I have been struggling with bulimic and anorexic symptoms for 18 years (I'm now 30). At some points during that time my weight and eating habits have been normal. For the past 18 months I've been vomiting almost every day, usually multiple times. I vomit without inducing it, I can just make it happen. This makes it too tempting to do it because its so easy, so I vomit regardless of what I eat- whether its salad or ice cream or anything healthy or fattening. My weight has been low, although I do not think I look too thin, but my weight has been around 85 lbs and I'm 5'2". I haven't had my period in 10 months. This month I had extreme swelling all over my body and my weight went up more than 5 lbs over night.  My dr. said I have menopausal symptoms. I don't know what to do. Can you give me information on the bloating symptoms, why my period stopped & if it will come back, and why my weight is low but I don't look skeletal? thank you for any help you can offer.

Dear faer,

There is hope.  Your body can return to more normal functioning.  When an individual is at your height and weight, the body slows down and preserves energy for minimal functioning.  Menses cease.  Blood work would show the follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) to be low or in the menopausal range.  Nutrition with appropriate caloric amounts at your age would normally move the body back to normal functioning.

Getting comprehensive eating disorder care for your needs is important.  Seek out specialists in your area.  You would need a higher level of care:  residential treatment or inpatient.  Check with your insurance company for the programs that are contracted with them.

Hi there. It sounds like you have a very severe eating disorder.  The symptoms that you are describing are normal for someone who has an eating disorder.  You have suffered from this for a long time.  Unfortunetly your body is repsonding to this.  It can be fixed though.  You need to get some help.  Rehab would be great if you are able to, if not please look into anorexia and bulimic meetings in your city.   When your body does not have enough fat on it, this will cause you not to have your period.  Swelling is very common too.  You really need to get some serious help and conquer this problem. your weight is extremely low for somene of your height, and I know that you might not think you look skeletal but understand that can also be are disease telling us that we dont. I was there.  When the truth of that matter is that you are not healthy right now.  If you do not have the funds to go to rehab, try some very intense therapy.  Seeing a nutritionist too will be great.  Getting on a meal plan.  When your body gets so below your ideal BMI, it begins to not function correctly.  The important thing to know though is that the body can heal.  You just now have to take the steps to get well.
