how to begin weight loss after recovery

I have been weight restored for about 2 years but I have overshot my weight goal and would like to return to a BMI of 20, so rather healthy. I am only 4'11 and I am pretty active...burning 300-500 calories in exercise each day.

I am curious to know if 1200 calories would be a safe amount to begin consuming. I am 22 years old, so outside of the growing years. I am afraid that if I consume 1200 calories my metabolism will shut down. I gained more weight than desired from binge eating and now I'd like to lose a few pounds to get to a weight where I feel comfortable. I know that being this size and getting mistaken for being pregnant can lead to a relapse so I'm trying to go about this in a healthy manner and get back to the size that made me feel good.

Any advice whatsoever?

Hi Chrissy

I have recovered from Binge eating disorder, Bulimia and Anorexia and I too put on a bit of weight following recovery. I wanted to be at a comfortable weight and since I study nutrition I decided to create my own diet. I lost a healthy amount of weight and still had a lot of energy to exercise.

I suggest sticking to a high protein diet and limiting the amount of carbohydrates you eat. Carbohydrates, fats and proteins are all digested in a particular order and knowing this order is the key to any weight loss. If you eat a meal of steak, gravy and chips (not the best choice) the carbohydrates from the meal will be digested first and used for energy, the rest will be stored. The human body only uses what it needs at one time, and stores the rest. If you engage in a high protein diet, your body will use stored body fat for energy as it will not have carbohydrates. Protein also enables you to stay fuller for longer. If you are going to eat carbohydrates, eat them separately as a snack, and avoid having them after 4pm.

If you need more help email me, or follow my blog (i've just started writing it): http://nicola-beatingbulimia.blogspot.com/ and i'll be posting meal plans shortly

well your "diet"....how many calories was it? how much did you lose? how long did it take? how much were you exercising? i am quite knowledgeable about nutrition in general but with the disorder i'm not sure how my body will respond.
